I have an idea for a tool item. It be crafted something like this:
[] []
Where seeds are saplings.
It would have limited uses (maybe around 150). The crafting recipe is up for discussion; it should probably be a lot more expensive than it is. Maybe it could use items from the proposed Aether? In any case, it should probably be very expensive.
Anyway, its function:
It would bring things to life by right clicking. For example, right clicking on dirt would turn it into grass, right clicking on tilled soil would grow wheat (no seeds required!), right clicking on a pork chop (dropped on the ground) would spawn a pig, likewise you could spawn any mob by dropping its item on the ground and using the staff of life.
It would instantly grow saplings into trees, like bonemeal; it would also make already-grown trees grow taller. It would turn cobblestone into mossy cobblestone.
Now, you might be saying "this sounds like fun, but what practical purpose is there, really?"
It would also heal (two hearts per use) any player/mob it is used on, although you wouldn't be able to heal yourself with it. So in multiplayer, it would be a bit like an RPG party-system game; you could have a "healer" in your party, who uses the staff of life on people, and then you could heal without switching weapons.
Tell me what you think, and feel free to expand upon it and give suggestions.

Minecraft Beta 1.2: "I'll grind your bones to make my bread!"
There's a major flaw with spawning mobs by "reviving" their drops. What is this flaw you may ask?
You can't TARGET them. That's the flaw. You'd target the block it's on, rather than the item itself.
Also, go suggest that in runecraft or magicraft mods, in the Released Mods section, or the Requests and Ideas for Mods section. It could be part of those mods. But it should definetly not be in vanilla minecraft.
Yes. But I prefer it, it makes me feel accomplished when it's done, I also enjoy seeing the slow growth of grass to barren dirt. It's the basic illusion of progress that gets me.
I do see what you mean about the pig thing though.
But I really like the idea of being able to heal other players instantly.
I understand, perhaps have it where you can store a unit of food in the staff, and then use it to heal the target, you have to reload the staff after each use. Cake cannot be used, though all other single-use foods can.
In an earlier version of minecraft, you smelted iron by throwing iron ore down and lighting it on fire. I'm pretty sure this could work the same way.
The thing here, is that you weren't targetting the dropped ore, but rather, the block underneath. So then the item would "catch on fire" much like you would if you were to step on that block that you set ablaze.
This is what smelted the ore, not targetting the it directly, because you can't.
Also, as far as "storing" food in the staff goes, just make a formless recipe that requires the staff in the middle, and any number of single-use food items arround it. It would have that many charges (so max 8)
But as to spawning animals, you could easily code an effect that's "like" fire, in that it effects item on the block you're clicking, and use that to spawn animals. I never said anything about having to specifically "target" the item; most people would probably figure out to click the block below it.

That makes more sense... but how would you do the storage?
And I don't equate waiting a random lengthy period of time to "progress" :tongue.gif:
Right-click with the staff, it brings up a GUI to insert a food from your inventory. It has a single slot. When you place the food in, it is instantly consumed and the staff is charged with the healing energy. The staff can hold 5 energy. When used, it'll heal 2 hearts to the target but they get knockback and cannot be healed until they stop wincing (like how you cannot damage an enemy with a bow until they stop wincing.)
As a caveat. Using the staff will give a healing to everything you use it on. Using it on a hostile mob will actually HEAL it's damage; though it can be used on a wolf and other player. As stated, you cannot use it on yourself.

How would that work if you have a porkchop on top of a block of dirt? What will take precedence? The dirt turning to grass? or the porkchop spawning a pig?
And, as far as targetting monsters goes, if you have a charge in the staff, and target a skeleton or zombie with it, and would be in range for it to work, it would die instantly.
They're undead. You're giving them life. They die.

I'm meh about the grass seeding. Really MEH. I actually prefer the manual labor of having to seed my courtyards.
Big no to the healing. Food should be the only way of restoring health.
This idea is nice and novel, but I see it parallel a lot of current functionality.

That was actually how i'd originally conceived it. Torture creepers endlessly for sadistic revenge!

Insta-kill? Now THAT sounds overpowered!
Maybe it would just do damage equivalent to the amount of healing stored?
