I think there should be knifes because once I was LOADED with diamonds, gold, and other good loot when night fell.So then I looked in my inventory and I left my sword behind.I didn't have any crafting benches or enough cobblestone. But I had 1 stick and 1 cobblestone so I thought what if I could craft a knife in my inventory with a stick and a cobblestone. It would do half the damage of a sword and could be crafted like this cobblestone

Maybe you should think before you go out at night with all your ****.
Minecraft Survival Items.
1) Keep a Sword on at all times
2) Keep a tool with you that can be useful in any situation. Example, Have a pick to get out of mines, have a shovel to dig a stairway.
3) keep coal and sticks with you in case you run out of torches.
4) Keep a workbench and a furnace with you at all times
5) keep some sort of healing item with you at all times
6) don't bloody bring your rare items with you, unless you need to transport them somewhere.
That's my 6 cents.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works
