Backpacks help you hold extra stuff. You wear it just as you would a tunic or chestplate, and press a chosen hotkey to look inside. The normal inventory is a 3X9 rectangle (including the things you can use by pressing the number keys or scrolling with the mouse, it’s 4X9). Back packs would add on 2 more rows of 9 items each. Stacking rules still apply (E.G. no more than 64 cobble per stack, no more than 16 eggs per stack, etc.) Backpacks can be put in backpacks, but they can't have anything inside of them. Backpacks with gear in them can only be worn, not even carried. The formula is: ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> is string is cowhide
Magical backpacks would save the stuff inside them when you die, and go with you to the spawnpoint. The catch? Not only do you need a gold bar to make one, they also only hold a single row of 9 items; half that of a regular backpack. Also, you have to take items out to use them (both backpacks). The formula for magic packs is: ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> ]" title="-<->" /> is string is cowhide
Please give me some feedback, and could somebody make a mock-up or banner if they're enthusiastic about the idea?

It's leather, not cowhide. But besides that, why would you need more space? 4x9 can hold pretty much anything. I do like the idea of the magic backpack, but I think it should only work once, or else dying would have even less of a penalty.

I do like that. Maybe there's a gold star on a magic pack and when you die, the star simply disappears, becoming a normal back pack.

But why do you need a normal backpack in the first place?
Here's a scenario to explain that:
You're 50 blocks down; little light, tons of ore, even more cobble, and even some diamond. Your inventory is stuffed, save for your empty back pack. As you dig through the caves, lighting a torch on the wall every so often, you leave behind a trail of cobble. You dig away a block, and think you see a little glitter. You break through the block below it, and enter a large room. It's about 5X5, the walls themselves 6X6. You light a torch on the wall. All around you dazzles diamond. Your diamond slots are full, and there's no more room! Good thing you brought a backpack! You dig away. After you excavate the diamonds, you leave the cave. As you leave, a creeper blows up the delicate dirt bridge above the lava that led into the diamond room, sealing it off forever. You would have never gotten those diamonds... without your pack.
