Hello, I'm Pug101. I've been playing Minecraft since early Alpha and this question has been in my mind for a few months now. "Why won't Notch lengthen block levels so we can have huge mountains and bigger caves?" I've found many people say (from mods to server chat) that the mountains are boring and short and caves (unless you hit a holy mother cave) are small and dull. BUT! Notch can lenghten the block limits to add more to minecraft in a simple way. A good example is the new indie game "Terraria". This game has been quoted to "be minecraft in 2D but with stuff Notch was to 'lazy' to add". In this "2D indie game" caves go down a LONG way (Alot more than 64 blocks from sea leve) and mountains can go higher than (let's just say) 40 blocks. Now I have NO EXPERIENCE in coding or Java, but lengthening block levels can add HUGE MOUNTAINS, that actually make a sight, and MASSIVE CAVES, that can scare the most toughest adventurers and the most experienced miners.
first of all, i have a world that has a mountain that goes up to the ceiling, trees almost don't grow on it. . second, you are suggesting a huge update that would take forever to code. notch isn't lazy, right now he is working on maps, and trying to get minecraft released by 11/11/11 which would be awesome. everyone wants a higher ceiling and lower bedrock, bigger caves and higher, more epic mountains. they have been suggested thousands of times. and every time there is some sort of problem with it, from lighting problems to just coding problems in general. its cool and i want it too, but its just extremely unlikely that it will ever happen
The system requirements to to double the size of the world would be insane. Every empty space is not actually empty but a block of air.
Notch, a while ago, mentioned about somehow extending the ceiling of the world only when anything was built up higher but even then there was a concern about performance when there are a lot of high structures.

I know that building a super massive tall structure would give me a minecraft boner too but if you are at the height limit you can already clearly see the maximum render distance. It would do nothing but add a slight bit of novelty and wouldn't add that much in terms of gameplay. Maybe if the maximum render distance gets increased and the engine gets upgraded then maybe but other than that, no.
With the hight too high you could jump and hit the void because the blocks can't generate fast enough for it stop you.
Two words: terminal velocity.
There's a mod that can increase the height called yMod. It's not updated to the latest version yet, unfortunately.
Yeah that argument is a terrible one. We already have variables that define player speed. All we need is one that caps fall speed.

Yes, but it doesn't mean we have to only expand up. There is a huge amount of space AFTER bedrock...I know it's hard to code, but why not drop bedrock levels 50 more blocks or so? And Minecraft is a sandbox game, anyone can do anything with it. So don't just say "Explore :3". I don't like exploring and I don't like getting far from home.
This seems to be a big issue on the forums, I've seen lots of threads about this. I don't really see why people need more than 128 blocks of height, but I guess it would be nice.

Well, My point was for notch to expand UP or DOWN,mostly down because there is a huge amount of space (maybe 75-200 blocks) after bedrock level.

Actually, it is infinite space, but it is nonexistent.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.

Stop posting that. I already saw a mod warn you.
