Although I had already seen topics on an armorstands, why not take this one step further?
For non-armor items, may I suggest a generic Display Case? Say you want to show off some of your items or build a museum or show the wares in your shop that can't just be set down. You can't simply just place coal or flint and steel or sulfur and such things down into the world: You'll lose them if you leave them alone!
In order to preserve such items in the world, you construct something like this:
[]
This will crate a glass case with a wooden bottom. In the space there would be whatever item you wish to preserve. You know how building a glass block over a floating item just lets the item sit inside of the glass block? This would have a similar-looking effect, only it's centered in the block.
Or you can just keep it empty, in the event that you want to make it look like someone robbed the place or you want a glass-topped coffee table. XP
Now you can set down your items in the world without fear of losing them!
When the Display Case is destroyed, there would be a crashing noise and the case would drop the item and two or three sticks.
Well, damn. o.O I didn't see that anywhere in the "this has already been posted" thread...now I feel like an idiot.
But yeah...I actually had more SMP use in mind for this. Since I normally play on the Herocraft server and they have a sign shop system, sometimes it's not too clear what is being sold. Especially when it comes to the wools and various logs. Not everyone understands the damage system for items or why it needs to be labeled as a small string of numbers rather than Red_Wool. Thus: display cases.
Guess I should've used the Search function, too. My bad.
