Yep, time to update an old block to new standards. I feel this is well needed and hope you all(and Notch)do too.
Bookshelves. There are flaws in them. One, they are purely decorative. Two, you can't recover them, wasting a lot of materials. Let's fix both. :biggrin.gif:
To address the first problem: This has probably been suggested before, many times, but bookshelves need to be able to be written in. I suggest there be three books, each a 1000 character limit, per bookcase. These are basically selected when the shelf is right clicked, and come up as what look like save files. There would be three, default as Book 1, Book 2, and Book 3, but like saves, can have their titles changed. You click your book, and if you are the placer of the bookcase, you may edit the book, and if you are a visitor(as in SMP), you may read the book. Editing books would be like signs, but with bigger areas to write and a turn-page option.
And the second: When destroying a bookcase, with any material including fist, instead of receiving nothing, you receive 3 books. Destroying a bookcase would remove all book-saves as mentioned in the first problem's solution. This would add to realism, because if you actually disassembled a bookcase in reality, you'd keep your books, not just obliterate them.
Great idea! I'm tired of needing to read sings to tell stories. Even if someone say it's already been mentioned I still love it! You should also be able to write shorter messages on paper, too.

So, thoughts? Refrain from trolling, please.
