With the glorious introduction of weather into the game perhaps we should start thinking about how the weather actually affects gameplay. That I've seen there is rain and snow currently in game and already I have a few ideas:
Wet Sand:
-Wet sand is created when sand is touched by rain.
-Wet sand is not affected by gravity.
-Wet sand would look more like a cross between dirt and sand.
-Wet sand would dry out after about a quarter of an in game day.
-Dried sand will not fall unless a block touching it is removed.
--Running around along the beach I'm sure we've all seen sandy over hangs that collapse in a chain reaction if we remove one but it was never possible to make one unless they include this block.
Snow Drifts:
-Yes I already know this exists in the game.
-My suggestion is to have snow fall even outside of snow biomes.
--See further suggestion "Seasons"
-When it snows outside of snow biomes perhaps have different types of land have different "Stick Rates" to which the snow would stick to (i.e. it would build on dirt/grass before sticking to stone).
Water Collectors:
-Craftable item:
[] [] []
[] []
(I'm fairly certain this combo isn't used yet...compass without the redstone)
-Takes up a 2x1 space: = collection bin = spout
- When placed the spout is facing towards you with the collection bin behind it (i.e. like the pillow of the bed always being away from you when you place it).
- Could be used in houses by taking out a single block space then placing it in the hole. Any time it rained you could drain the collection bin with a bucket (with lengthy time delays between each bucket).
-Could also be made to work under such places as waterfalls and lava flows. could be used to extend the shelf life of a water or lava spring.
- To prevent abuse of this item to gain easy lava it could have a time limit on how long it could hold a buckets worth of lava before it started to over flow or break the collector.
Seasons:
-As we all know Minecraft is best played as a survival game, but what kind of environment leaves you in a place where the seasons never change?
- The introduction of seasons could help create new situations for the game.
- There could be four seasons that would change in respective time (not an in game day but maybe two to three weeks?)
- Each season could have certain graphical effects and spawns. Spring could have more flowers spring up with lighter colored leaves. Summer would be the "Standard". Fall could have browning leaves that would occasionally just fall away and yellowing grass. Winter would be a lot like a snow biome except trees not normally found in a snow biome would shed all of its leaves and the grass would turn to snow.
- For the winter I also propose an enemy spawn that resembles a sasquatch. This creature could survive outside of winter but his fur would change colors from a white coat to a brown one. He would also be player sized or bigger.
- Another winter hit could be the introduction of snow men. By collecting 3 snow balls a person could construct him at a table by placing them straight up and down. This would give a body that would be 2 tall and 1 in all other directions. A person could then place their frosty friend out on a patch of snow leaving a basic body standing there. The fun comes from the decorating. By taking two sticks and right clicking on the snowmans sides (determined by player) arms would spawn on the body but would not block movement. By going to another end the player could use three pieces of coal on the top half to have a face spawn and three on the bottom half to have buttons spawn on him. The snowman would follow the regular rules of snow and melt in a certain light level. All items could be collected (this could also be done through an interface equip style menu).
Thermostat:
-This would be the way to tell what season it was.
-Made like this: [] []
* the is redstone
- This could be held in the invintory or placed on a wall and it would have three indicators. From top to bottom it would tell if it were:
Top: Summer
Middle: Spring/Fall (up to player to tell graphical difference
Bottom: Winter
- Say a player spends an inordinate amout of time underground and hasn't seen the light of day for a while, they could place this by the door so they could be keeping track of the seasons.
Lightning and Thunder:
-We have rain so why not have some ambiance to go with it?
-Some random number generator could determine if the rain that was falling was light or stormy.
-Stormy weather would be darker and would, on occasion, have lightning strike.
-Lightning would only strike within the view range of the player within the distance of normal fog
-Would look similar to glow blocks coming down in a jagged array.
-Getting struck by lightning would hurt a player or mob, would set off creepers, and would light trees on fire.
-Shortly after lightning strikes a small sound clip could be used to represent thunder.
Please do not just say my idea sucks, if you like it please tell why or what parts. If you don't like it please do the same.
I wasn't sure what had been suggested since if I try to search it runs me through google but I'm going to try to keep this alive so that Notch will take closer note of it.

yeah, you need to join the searcher group, it enables search.
ask for it to be posted in the already posted topics, trying to keep it alive that long without bumping is impossible
its stickyd on the top of the suggestion page, ill give you a link: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13760
