Currently, zombies are the least threatening of all mobs. Spiders can climb walls, creepers are obviously a threat, even skeletons can pincushion the unwary, and shoot past partial barriers. Also, zombies drop feathers - what's up with that, anyway? I believe all these can be fixed in one change - give zombies items.
Zombies would start out either empty-handed, with a wood or stone tool, or with a rock to throw:
* Empty Handed: Can open doors (takes them awhile), will pick up a dropped item (see "Throwable Item" below).
* Pickaxe/Shovel/Axe: Can (slowly) mine, dig, or chop, respectively. They will only do this if they see the player on the other side.
* Sword: Does more damage.
* Throwable Item: They will throw the item at the player, doing the same damage as a normal hit, and then become Empty Handed. The item falls on the ground next to the player. The default item is a chunk of cobblestone, but empty handed zombies can pick up any loose item to throw.
When they're killed, they drop the item they had (obviously). Tools will be 1/4 to 3/4 depleted.
But wait - free items! Won't this be overpowered?
No, why would you even think that? Wood and cobblestone are infinite resources, much easier to acquire by farming than zombie killing.
Aren't partially depleted tools a crappy drop for a newly more dangerous foe?
Yeah, they kinda are. Maybe zombies should drop something like Rotten Meat (works like Bonemeal) as well. Or have them wear armor, and drop a random piece of partially depleted leather/iron armor.
My base will be destroyed!
They only break barriers that they can see you standing behind. Stand around a corner. Or give your outer wall some defenses. And they're slow - you can shoot them before they finish breaking through.
Hasn't this idea been suggested?
Possibly. But I didn't see it in the previously suggested idea thread, and I don't remember one that combines smarter behavior with random equipment. I'm pretty sure the "picking up / throwing items" thing is new at least.
xD. I just like to write that... but really , that is really dumb , Why would a zombie that has no brain , and they normally only walk randomly like retarded , why would they have a pick ?
To answer that question we need to wait for a Zombie infection worldwide and give minecraft to a zombie and see if he can craft something...
Actually a better portion of zombie movies, at the very least, have the zombies trying to beat down doors or windows so I'm perfectly fine with that. Same goes for the armor, in resident evil an infected stars member didn't just shed his bullet proof vest. However I do agree that a zombie holding items is a tad over the line. I've only seen one movie where they used items and the ending sucked.
So I thumbs up the breaking certain items and trying to open doors, possibly make it so that they can only break things like glass dirt sand and cut wood (clay too?) since all the others take tools to break efficiantly (except trees but I'm not counting those)

I support Carrier Eagle
I support Power gloves
I support Coal Powered carts delay

To make Zombies more of a challenge how about they spawn in packs?
2-4 Zombies in a Pack
Spawn 2x More than Normal
Drop Bones and Sticks or somthin
