OK so I did a search for miniblocks and got the topic below but seeing as I was chided for necroing an old topic recently I figured I'd try starting a new one this time. <braces for further chiding>
The basic thread is about miniblocks. Smaller blocks within blocks that could be used to make more detailed objects in world. The problem with them is of course the requirements for higher resolution (I didn't understand that one but it's obviously a biggie) and a whole new game engine to accommodate these smaller blocks being placed freeform onto existing normal sized blocks.
I like the idea of chisels put forwards by one of the last posters on the first thread but obviously the need for a new engine kinda rules out in world placement.
My suggestion is to have a new crafting table that allows the creation of "custom" full blocks from "smaller" blocks. The reason I put smaller in quotes is this: What if the table transported the player to a new map, much the same way the netherportals do, and removed the normal restrictions on player movement. This would mean that the player was, in essence, just a floating camera. In this new map the player would be able to build in the normal fashion, but be restricted to a perfectly square world (the block they are creating). Mini blocks are the only thing that can be placed in this new world (which would act as the top of the crafting table if you were wondering) and they can be used to make basic shapes.
When the player leaves, their creation is rendered, either by taking pictures from all angles and slotting them together as with flowers and mushrooms or by slapping the pictures onto the block type of the players choice.
Ideally of course the full object would be rendered as an in game object like a torch but I have a feeling that this wouldn't work because of the resolution comment that I don't fully understand.
This is a frivolous suggestion and there are far more interesting things that should be made higher priority (like better books, that sounds awesome!) but still, worth the trouble for the sake of ultimate customisation?
Oh I almost forgot. To make a miniturette crafting table you'd need to combine a normal crafting table with a magnifying glass. Making a magnifying glass would be fairly simple an give another use to glass or even diamond.
or something similar. Maybe without the corner pieces. Maybe with a diamond in the middle instead.

Where glass is the magnifying glass. You get the idea.
When people chide you for necroposting, chide them back because they are stupid. Necroposting allows for support and can get more views (and thus more support) on existing ideas without cluttering the forum with repeats.
However, necroposting to bump your own topic or to not support an idea is annoying. If it's your own topic, you're being a douche, and if it's a topic your don't support, you're just trying to start a fight or you're not thinking clearly about how bumping the topic is helping the bad idea be more views.
TL;DR: If you support an existing idea, necropost. 'nuff said
Anyway, on this suggestion, my favorite topic is the 1/8th block topic (I believe started by yoshi) which is very well thought out and has plenty of support.

Thoughts? Flames? What do we think?
