Since I don't think F3 will be in the final release of the game, perhaps we could have a tool that can tell you the depth level you are at or possibly the x,y,z coordinates of your current location (with the former being my official suggestion).
It would be a simplistic device that would be useful for finding the optimal depth for mining diamonds and the like. It couldn't take too much programming and would be incredibly nice for in-game navigation. This could also add some interesting openings for adventure maps when searching for treasure?
Of course this item would function similar to a compass and should have a dynamic display with each number being 3x6, one pixel apart, and up to a total of a 9x6 area for the numbers, which is small enough for the standard icons (assuming that 128 will remain the maximum, legitimate height so that the 1 will take up less space).

Whereas would be redstone dust. Perhaps resembling a cell phone or a small handheld device.
This is a cool idea but as of now is unnecessary because of F3, but if notch were to get rid of the F3 function then this would be the best solution to that
Anyways, this isn't needed. Even if F3 is removed for whatever reason, all you need to know is: The top layer of bedrock is layer 5, and diamonds are most common around layer 16.

True, as of now F3 is obviously the more practical route, but it would be silly for to leave in such a debug feature. I offer an alternative.
EDIT: Because F3 is there to help debug the Beta. Such commands never make it in to final games, at least without a developer option (similar to the dev consoles in Source games or the Unreal engine).
I think X and Y are pretty much covered by the compass.
Z is still open though, and a tool for that is probably somewhat related to a barometer. There is a Mercury thread floating around the first couple pages of this forum, and that thread also contains barometer ideas.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.

Want to play Minecraft SSP like Spaceboot1? Try my modpack, all mods made by me, Spaceboot1!
X and Z are covered, not Y. Here:

Just that after release you will have to enable it again by going through a series of menus.
That is, if notch is going to do things in the usual manner.
It's a nice idea nonetheless.
albeit suggested many times.
