First off i read the topic "why your RPG ideas won't work" and realized they are all geared towards discouraging an MMORPG. What I'd like to do is build an single player map/rpg adventure that I could send to my friends...in the end it would be a mix of adventure/getting a chance to explore the "world" that i've created...with a few easter eggs and inside jokes it could be a cool experience. To achieve this things that could be added to the game would be some simple NPC's that hang out in town and maybe give a few quests/act as vendor's. I think a cool NPC would be someone who traded all ores/stones/dirt/sand at rediculous ratio's so I could burn off 1000 cobble for a diamond...lol...maybe not....
Also to discourage people from just digging/building their way thought designated quest hub/towns there could be some guard npc's who take you out when you mess with stuff as well as an npc that will repair any "additions"/damage to the city bringing it back to it's original design. Other than that maybe just adding some specific mobs in certain places/event triggers.
I thought I read something about a piston block that would move other blocks when power is applied to them, I'd really like to see that...i still remember the first time i was going to be able to make a waterfall turn on and off by having it go thought a metal door only to have my dreams shattered when water couldn't pass that block...lmao....
My friend and I recently started a new SMP map which was one of my original single player maps and at first we were building around what i had going on and then he wanted to go exploring so we went north for about two days and started mining (this exploring actually started as large scale pig hunt!). Then he wanted to make an outpost out there to mine resources to bring back to "town". The problem I had with this is that the exact same stuff can be found right under our town! The distribution of materials is uniform across the entire world (with respect to height above bed rock) as I understand it. I think it would be cooler if things like iron, diamonds, gold were scarce in some places and plentiful in others (aka real life...lol) so that it would make sense to have a gold mine 2km from your main base. The exception to this is that I'm totally going to build a beachhead in the nether after 1.6!
Finally I do not support map items in game...i think this is a waste of current development time...although I've said that before and loved things, I guess I'll have to see it in action before I really judge it!
ah young noobian you found otut about the anti-water passing block you can also use ladders stairs and others to block water
but you have a few good ideas but read the rules bud please try to add more detail to your ideas
personally I would like maps not very detailed ones but ones that can help me explore cause id like to expand the exploring part of minecraft substantially the best part is caves and finding good epic ones is hard
