I like the idea of a trash can and I think it would be better than an incinerator.
Why?
Well pressing Q rapidly for 10 minutes is BORING!
It could have an interface like a chest and we could send all our useless dirt blocks to hell with a few clicks and in a few seconds.
Thanks for that, i needed that. Good point too. I never thought of that. A good user interface would be great and having it look like the chests screen would make it work a lot easier. Plus it wouldn't delete the item until you actually get out of the window! Great Idea!
Dude, take a chill pill. It's just an idea on a friendly forum.
We talking about the same forum here? Apparently the forum you're on and the forum I'm on have had a netsplit some ages ago.
Most threads I've been at here have been charged with powerfully negative energies and figures that surpass even my subtle utterances of conceptual evil.
Also, I am usually quite relaxed (chill pill reference). If you find hostility in my tone; the hostility is of your own preconception. It doesn't take shouting and furled eyebrows to relay an opinion. He (the op) has been told multiple times that this idea served redundant purposes. He is arguing (which is proper and right(he should)) but is not arguing the correct things. Instead of attacking our criticisms for improvement(very good), he is attacking our credibility and ability to judge(insulting and bad).
If you move into town and all of them say you are immature/an-asshole/[insert-negativity-to-establish-point]; the common link is not them being that themselves, there may be a problem with you.
Similarly, if everyone declines an idea; it doesn't mean we're being a bunch of shitheads, it means there is a genuine concern to address. The CONCERN is NOT the collective credibility of hundreds of forum viewers from separate countries, separate upbringings, separate ages, and separate ways of life. The concern may be focused on the suggestion.
The OP almost ALWAYS fails to recognize this and instead insists that everyone is an enemy to HIM and not the idea. If the OP were to spend some time developing a useful applicable item/suggestion where the answer was not already present; he's more than welcome to post. We are NOT stymieing his creative focus. We are trying to say this suggestion is a no-go.
If you need a clearer painting than that; feel free to PM me(check my sig) and we'll discuss it there instead of spending more time on a fruitless debate here.
shift click stuff into trashcan, throw away trashcan, make another trashcan. I can see slight convenience; but it saves negligible time in the long run. /shrug
I think everybody is missing a very simple solution, that of simply adding a "Dispose" icon to the inventory, if you drag items from your inventory to the Dispose button a display could pop up up saying "Items will be deleted, are you sure? y/n".

I was referring to "why don't you stop being an idiot instead. It's a faster solution that saves you a great deal of stress in the long run.
I know, I know. It's a huge burden to have to USE your brain after you've had a long day of your hard-ass teacher going through triple digit multiplication and division with you; but I promise you, using your noodle may be much more effective than creating solutions for problems where the solution is ALREADY redundant."
If you want to say something about the idea, feel free, tell me why you don't like it, there is no reason to dump your sarcastic insults on people who are trying to share their idea.
@Skip Sandwich: Well that's a good idea but it wouldn't be minecraft appropriate I guess, since the game is trying to be a realistic survival/construction game. Crafting your trash can or making an incinerator works better for the concept imho

That seems like it'll get obnoxious quick, especially when you have q (eject) and dragging items out.
Remember that the delay for item destruction is 5 minutes or 1/4th of a full minecraft day/night cycle.

(also I appreciate the genuine helpful intention of the comment instead of trolling)
I've dropped items on my SMP server and returned to them days later. (real time days not minecraft days).
I understand this is probably some sort of glitch.

if you drop them in one chunk and them move so that chunk isn't loaded, they won't despawn. it's only if items spend 5 minutes in a loaded chunk.

You wont need to toss out the trash can. It would take care of the deleting for you. If you had to delete the trash can that would be dumb. So sorry if you were under that impression. I should be more clear on that.
Okay. Pressing Q for 10 minutes isn't necessary. If you drag an item out of the window and click, it flies out of your inventory. The entire stack. A lava bucket, essentially, is a trash can. You don't need to dig down a block, maybe two, for a trash can, sure, but then you have the equivalent of one. Should we add a new item because you don't want to dig one/two blocks down? No.
Please don't thank me for not "trolling" (which isn't what the people that posted on here were doing, they were just frustrated) because it took every ounce of my willpower to not put obscenities in this post and call you a variety of names. This little paragraph is what makes up for not having done that. [/rant]
lol, good job explaining. I feared I might have some targeting issues with dropping out of the inventory rather than throwing but hey, that makes sense :smile.gif:
Since many people are against the idea of creating a new item, perhaps Notch could add a new feature like dropping an item on to an existing block (let's say a furnace) would make it disappear.

That would make it different from a cactus only in that you can't touch a cactus. Not worth the trouble.

Every item that you've stockpiled has a use. Destroying it is utterly pointless. Too much wood, craft something. Too much stone? Build something. Too many saplings? Use them to fuel your furnace. Too much everything? Learn to use what you've got before collecting more.
I don't know how you people can complain about having too many resources. I had 6 large chests of cobble, 3 large chests of wood, 2 of dirt... And it all still wasn't enough once I actually took the time to make something out of it all. I had to go get more.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways

Our server had a huge project that used eminence amounts of cobble and sand. A huge Arena for our server. all nice and neat. To top it all off I had to add a glass top that dad over 2000+ sand used to make it all. we emptied our chests of cobble and sand. Now we don’t even use the thing. we are back up to almost twice the amount of cobble used with nothing to do with it. We do save almost all cobble, sand, and maybe dirt. but stuff like gravel, saplings, ect. is unneeded for us. We obviously have different game objectives that we are playing. What i have heard from you is that you are a compulsive hoarder of non needed blocks. and that you don’t build mu stuff. No more need for your input. you have stated your thoughts multiple times.

How the heck did you draw that conclusion? "I've never needed a trashcan because I use up all my items." does not lead to me being "a compulsive hoarder". The hoarder is the one who has so many items that they think they need a trash can for it all.

At yet you clearly don't understand a word that has been said and draw incorrect conclusions (see the above paragraph), so clearly I must restate my thoughts at least a dozen more times before you finally figure them out.

this idea really has no point, it took me about 5 minutes to make a "trash can" of my own
i wanted a way to burn items without any lava being seen, so i placed a dispenser facing a pool of lava, hooked it up to a redstone clock so that when i put items in the dispenser, they are dispensed in the lava, and i put a switch on it so it can turn it on and off. (i know that my contraption has no point either, but i was afraid that somehow my wolves would find a way to get in the lava). and it requires nothing be added to minecraft
