I don't know how to introduce this idea. I'll just get right to it.
THE WRENCH
First off, the wrench is crafted like this: []
[] []
with =wood planks, cobblestone, iron, gold or diamond
Instead of just simply right-clicking your stuff and it changes magically, why not use up your extra materials and make a wrench? A wrench is used to repair and adjust. However, it has a durability of the material it is made from. Don't worry, you can repair it (keep on reading.) Here are some possible uses (all of them uses 1 durability of your wrench):
Repairing: I'm starting with something major. Repairing! Yes, you can use your wrench to fix stuff instead of wasting your tools. To repair your tools, you need a workbench, a wrench, your tool and the material your tool is made of. It will repair it a fraction of your tool, depending on the tool (it repairs shovels to full, hoes/swords 1/2, and picks/axes 1/3. These amounts are based on the amount of material used to craft these items.) Yes, you can repair your wrenches, although it requires 2 wrenches. (It will repair 1/6 durability.) To repair your tool, go to your workbench and craft this:
= Wrench = Tool = Material of Tool
Your tool with the replenished durability will come out at the other end, and your wrench will stay in the crafting grid with -1 durability like buckets are given back after crafting cake.
Redstone Repeaters This is for you redstone nerds. Instead of cycling through your redstone repeater modes with your bare hands, DO IT WITH A WRENCH! However, to preserve your stinking wrench (which you can repair anyway,) you don't cycle through it, but you come to a screen that shows 4 buttons labelled 1, 2, 3 and 4 on a picture of a redstone repeater in the places they would be on a redstone repeater set to their modes.
Slabs Right-clicking a slab will change its position from the bottom half of a block space to the top half of a block space. 'Nuff said.
Pistons Maybe Hippoplatimus may change that you require wrenches to change the rotation of a piston, but it's his mod. Meh.

I don't mind the idea of a wrench, but I disagree with how you wish to implement it. Allow me to go into How I would do it...
Recipe
For the sake of consistency, I'm changing this. Also, as designed, the wrench uses too much material. I would change the recipe to be more like other tools, as follows.
[]
[] []
[] []
represents the component.
Usage There are several things here that I would change. First, the repairing seems a little hard to code, and (more importantly) doesn't make sense. Lastly, the ability to have tools last forever as long as you have two wrenches is just plain overpowered. I would remove this. Also, lifting a slab seems odd, it is being the height they are that makes them slabs.
However, there are other features I would add instead. First, I suggest that things like Dispensers, Furnaces, Craft Tables Workbenches, Redstone Repeaters, and Chests should need to be removed with a Wrench, or they break into materials. Also, a Wrench would be able to remove TNT the same way. Ditto for Levers, Buttons, and Pressure Plates.
Finally, the Wrench should be able to deactivate certain blocks. Triggers (Lever, Button, Pressure Plates), Furnaces, and anything that can be activated with Redstone could be right clicked with a Wrench to turn the block "off". Said blocks would turn a darker color and be inert (not doing anything/acting as a decorative block) until right clicked again to turn them back "on". Yes, this would also work for .
If you have more ideas to use the wrench, post it on this very topic! If I like it, I'll put it up here! But if you don't have an awesome idea but you agree that my awesome idea of the wrench is awesome, the post anyway.

You need one part of the material it is made of to repair a tool.

dirt stays in the air
why not slabs

I've always thought the top texture for furnaces looked good as a tile block, and pressure plates could be plates. Maybe adventure map makers could put random levers and then turn them off for the feel of machinery or steamworks. Just saying.
Thanks for your other ideas, I like them.

What about my adjusting half-blocks idea?
Not sure it's really that necessary, equally not sure a wrench is the appropriate tool for the job.
