In Minecraft we can play around with various substances, but there is a basic, but useful compound which minecraft seems to have forgotten.
This compund is steel, for those of you who don't know, steel is pretty much carbon and iron mixed together to from a stronger substance.
(There is more to this, but lets keep it simple and not overcomplicate it)
But how could we get carbon? No worries, coal is almost pure carbon, the same as diamond only less dense.
So if we mix iron ore - with coal and then placed the mix in a furnace we could create a steel ingot.
(After we mix iron ore and coal it could be called "steel dust" "iron and carbon" iron ore and coal" etc. although these are just ideas to help Notch.)
Steel is harder and stronger than iron and so it could be used like iron, only to make harder, more durable tools and armour.
Steel has a navy blue tinge and although it would be similiar to iron, the tinge of navy blue would distinguish the two different metals at first glance, like these two shades of wool -
Well, I hope you like this idea and I'd enjoy reading through your comments and I will add to this Post if Neccessary.

Ok yeah, already suggested...by me...like two days ago.
Well you don't need to troll this post then if you had the same idea

So, this is just pretty much iron... With almost the same ingredients... Only better? Who on earth would still use iron then?
Exactly my issue with it.

The problem with steel is that it realistically would be made from iron and coal or charcoal, so there are only so many ways you can go with implementing it realistically. (which is what you seem to be worried about) Whether it's just a straight craft, or whether you need to resmelt it or whatever, you can still jump straight over the iron tier and directly to steel. Even if you add a new crafting bench like an anvil (which would likely serve no other useful purpose) it would still likely be made from iron, thus you can STILL skip directly over iron tier.
It's impossible to balance Steel Armor. Either it will be too strong, and no one will ever make iron armor when they can just use the same material to make steel, or it'll be too weak and it wont be worth using at all or even adding to the game.
