Hi!
So my suggestion for minecraft would be to add mailboxes and letters to multiplayer.
Right now, communication in minecraft is very limited. Without plugins, a vanilla server can really only communicate by chat, which is useful for short messages, but really nothing else, ergo, letters and mailboxes.
Crafting
Letters would be crafted like so: = paper =ink sac
[] ]" title="-<->" /> []
[] []
[] []
(I have pictures of the concept, but the forums doesn't want to accept pics right now D:)
And therefore, mailboxes would be crafted like this:
[] [] []
Use
To use these two items, one would need to craft a mailbox first. When placing the mailbox, a small screen would come up, much like signs, but shorter, labeled Address. After inputting an address (Say, Uberrandom Home, for my main base), it would be placed, end of story. To send a letter to someone, you would craft a letter, and write a message along with a subject. The message should not be tiny, like signs, but not epic novels. My first estimate would be about 4-5 times the amount of writing space as a sign, but feel free to give me your estimates. To send a letter, there would be a second writing space for a recipient. The recipient would be whatever address you are sending the letter to. The address and recipient should both be editable, in case of accidental typos. This is where I really need some input. I want to know your opinion on how letters should be delivered. One idea is that if the address is good, the letter would warp directly to the recipient's mailbox. The other is that you would have to physically take it and put it in the correct mailbox, and the letter would reject being put in any other mailbox (so you don't put it in the wrong one, and can't get it back). Both ways have their own advantages. Either way, when you check your mailbox, there will be a list of messages you have and their senders to read.
Reasons to implement a letter system and final notes
Right now, chat really restricts us in the fact that the recipient has to be on the server at the same time as you, and they could possibly miss the message. With these suggestions, you would be able to send out messages that can be read anytime.
As a final bit, i would love it if anyone would like to take a crack at making a server mod for this, or if someone could be kind enough to make a support banner, that would be much appreciated!
I'd check out the Minecraft Social Overhaul suggestion. It's a lot better than an in game mail system imo.
