As far as i'm concerned, this is my original idea. Upon searching for "smithing", I found nothing but RPG server ads.
I think it would be cool if there was armor making in Minecraft. REAL armor making. Let's say, you could make leather armor with a workbench. No big deal. But, when you're moving up to iron and diamond armor, or gold for the showoffs, you'll need to make an ANVIL, crafted like this.

With an anvil, you could place it down, and it would have the same dimensions as any block. However, you can't smith armor with your bare hands, though Chuck Norris can with his eyes. Basically, you need to make two more items: a FORGE and a HAMMER, crafted like this.

With representing a lava bucket. The hammer would be a tool, and would be able to smith 10 pieces of armor before breaking. The forge would be 2x2, and would appear as a stone box type thing with a red glow inside. When you got an ingot or gem, you would put it in the forge (same gui as furnace) to soften it up for smelting. It would then have a reddish tint and appear as Soft (gem or ingot name here). If left for 1 Minecraft day, they would revert back to normal, or with a 10% chance, you'd lose it (like it bended out of shape). With soft gems or ingots, you could take out a hammer and right click on the anvil. It would appear as a workbench GUI, but it would not say "Crafting" at the top, but "Smithing". When you used the soft minerals to shape a piece of armor, you'd get a piece of armor.
Why? This adds nothing but a more detailed proccess.
And tell me, if you cna carry over 500 cubit blocks of stone around with you, why can't you craft armour with your bare hands?

What do you think of this?
Great idea! When Notch adds Realism (he stated on his Twitter) this could be implemented.
EDIT: And, Cobalt, it's not a fix, it's an idea.
