I know its been talked about, but I want to bring it up again rather than resurrect some old thread. I dont see many people talking about this anyway. In my opinion, finite water would be bad. First let me explain what I mean by finite water...and what finite water actually means.
Finite = not infinite.
Infinite = never ending.
Get a cup of water and spill it on the table. It will spread farther and farther, but as it spreads it also gets shallower. Take some of the water away without putting it back and the amount of water will be reduced. Durrrr, I know. If I were to make a reservoir tank and then make a hole at the bottom, the water would all drain out and fall on the ground. So with finite water, there wouldnt be any source blocks and water would react more realistically.
How water behaves in classic is NOT finite. It only replicates itself continuously downward and horizontally. Classic water is infinite. If you want realism in Minecraft, re-adding this would be a step in the opposite direction.
The way water reacts in survival is kind of both. It reacts much more realistically than classic, but can still have an infinite amount of itself if placed one in each corner of a 2x2 hole or if you remove water from underneath the surface since each stagnant surface water block is considered a source block. The source block creates a continuous stream of water, but the water never flows past a certain point, depending on the environment. So its kind of infinite, but with some characteristics of finite water.

Alright, so why would finite water be bad? Well if we assume its going to react realistically, that will screw up a lot of our water creations. No more fountains, water slides, water elevators, magical water poles, sewer systems, mob traps, cannons, etc. Creating your own lake or dam would also prove far more difficult than it is now. It would take a ridiculous amount of time transporting bucket after bucket to your giant hole in the ground and remember you would be taking away from other sources. Im not sure im comfortable with that . Plus with the blocky nature of Minecraft, it just wouldnt look right. To make finite water look good, youd have to make the blocks at least 4 times smaller. Just my opinion, some of you might think the size of the blocks are fine for finite water. I just dont think making realistic water fits with both the way Minecraft looks and the gameplay of Minecraft in general. The way water currently is now fits Minecraft better with a nice balance between realism and the parallel reality that Minecraft seems to exist in.
If you are a builder like me, im sure you understand why I like water the way it is. If you are mostly an adventurer who prefers mining diamond and fighting zombies, then of course you will care less about things that will effect us builders (like fire caused by lightning). Remember when water was changed from the way it reacts in classic? We loved it, but now people want it changed again and I dont see why. Its fine the way it is and im curious to know how many actually disagree.
If the water must be changed, I am however in favor of making the source block half as tall while everything else remains the same. To make the source block one block high again, empty another bucket on the same half block of water. I dont know how it will turn out, but its just an idea. I think someone made a suggestion about how water should react more realistically to waterfalls and I think its a good idea that will work well with my water half block idea.
I know im going to get some disagreements and im ok with that. Just keep things at a respectable level. Im allowed to have an opinion that differs from your's, remember. If you agree with me, then even better! Dont hesitate to let your opinion known even if its just repeating what someone else said.
