Currently, wolves will bark all the time, for no reason at all.
I think this could be used as a useful mechanic, however. Instead of just barking randomly, they should only bark when a hostile mob is within so many blocks of the wolf. Since they will not attack creepers, having this could at least allow the player to know when one is around.
Like it. But I personally think they should growl when an enemy is near.
I agree with the OP it's a really good idea, but growling would be awesome because sometimes I need to hear the wolves bark so I know where I left them lol.

I agree with this. Having the usual "Hi, I'm a doggy!" sounds is good for knowing where your dog is, or just for atmosphere, but having a danger warning would be very nice, and certainly believable. In fact, if puppy knew when monsters were coming, it would make me actually want to tame a wolf. Currently, I'm more worried about one bumping me into lava/my cactus farm/off a ledge than about the little bit of extra damage it can do.

I have about 12 wolves, and they all stay inside for that exact reason lol, so yeah some sort of creeper warning growl means I would take them for walks and not neglect them.
