Stunning game. Simply awesome. One of the reasons I'm enjoying it so much is that its REALLY scary down in those caverns, where unmentionable things moan from somewhere in the darkness. Somewhere not too close, I hope.
And when they appear, the fight isn't a matter of button-mashing the same sequence and leaping about like a loony, as it is in another online role-playing game I might mention. Fights change depending on the environment, and there's no way to skill up to the point that those monsters no longer terrify. Kudos, chaps, kudos.
But there is a way to make it much less scary, to the game's detriment. Imagine if, when you die, you could simply respawn and run back to the scene of the fight, collect all your important gear, re-group, kill the monster (if it didn't blow itself up when it got you) and collect the rest of your gear. Back to business as usual, death has cost you nothing.
The option to respawn robs the game of its terror, which is why I play it in ironman mode. This means that, if you die, there is no option to respawn. You must create a new world and start again.
Not everyone will like this, which is why my suggestion is to make ironman mode optional. Have an option at world-creation time which, when turned on, means that you will not be given a respawn button when you die. For people that want it, this will make the terror real when you're lost and in the dark, having run out of torches. And when your worst fears are realized, there won't be the temptation of that respawn button staring you in the face.
I want the prospect of death to terrify me. Anyone else feel like that?
Obviously, manually is how I do it now. But there's always the knowledge that the button will be there and that, in my weakness, I will be tempted to use it. That temptation is easily removed (for people that want it) and that's my suggestion.
Notch is planning to add Hardcore mode witch is very much like Ironman mode that when you die, you have to start a fresh new world. Says so in the MC Wiki.
You got a good start, having a well-explained posts and only neutral replies below supporting replies. Good job. I wish there are more people like you but its not like we can drag them out of their houses and educate them in a conference about forum manners.

Zap.
And just do it yourself. Notch has no reason to waste time because of your lack of self-discipline in avoiding the respawn button.
