(Note: I honestly did try looking for a fence's post, but the seach feature is down. I was sad and I can only hope I don't break too many posting rules by posting this)
I was talking with a friend and we got on the concept of different fences.
I.E. Barbed Wire and maybe even Electric Fences.
They would effectively be a neat way of combining the current wooden fence, and upgrading it to make it work like a cactus (although perhaps stronger?)
Barbed Wire:

or something of that nature.
Electric Fence:
[] [] [] (Pretend thats Redstone dust, or a Redstone torch or something)
or something like that.
just seemed like an extra way to make use of Flint, Iron, and Redstone. Especially since I always end up with a lot of extra redstone.
How exactly would an electric fence be different from barbed wire? It's not like you're going to need to turn it on and off since you can't climb fences anyway.
I don't think that redstone could shock you. It carries some sort of charge, but it is obviously harmless since you can touch glowing redstone without getting hurt.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
I think the redstone fence should light-up if anything. I rather do like the barbed wire fence idea though. Like cacti, but can be placed next to each other, but only 1 block tall. Possibly make it unlike a fence, where you can pass through it and take damage. Use in traps and defense, in both SSP and SMP.

I think you can contain lava between sugar cane or half-blocks, to that effect.
Sugar cane you say? Interesting thought, I'll have to try it. Still having a fence block with that in mind would help get away from strange things like that.
"Oh hey, what is that?"
"Looks like glowing bamboo. Go check it out."

Since there is little difference between barbed wire fences and electrical fences in this suggestion, perhaps electrical fences are just faster to kill? Either way it's good.
Gives you 2 Torch Fences. Used just like a regular fence, this fence gives off the same light as a torch, so we no longer have to build an additional structure near the fence or place torches on the ground like some kind of animal.

I mainly use cacti as an anti spider fence already lol. Wouldn't have to with the barbed wire.

To show that it is coiled.

Just saying.
Then I'd love it.
These are suggested, but good ideas that should be added.
