I was showing a friend of mine Minecraft a couple weeks ago and told him a story of when I accidentally burnt a forest down. The first thing out of his mouth was can you get charcoal or something from it?...
(Sadly he isn't interested in Minecraft)
With the introduction of Pigs + Fire = cooked pork, I figured I would pop on and suggest this idea.
So this is my suggestion: If Log blocks are set on fire they have a 1/3 chance of dropping charcoal upon their demise.
This would allow 'strip mining' of forest areas, while giving a reward for your random pyromania.
I don't wanna say noob, but charcoal is already in the game, and if it was gather able in the way you suggested, there would be grievers EVERYWHERE, and we DO NOT want that.

Your first comment is invalid to the situation of past events, Coal was already in the game (Charcoal = B1.2)... As were Cooked pork chops (Fire+Pig = B1.5).
Your second comment is valid to an extent. However, TREES ALREADY BURN. (just thought I'd try on your random CAPS LOCK )

No i mean you can actually burn wood in a furnace to get Charcoal already. If you had to actually burn the trees then people would do this all the time in multiplayer, which would cause some problems.
"ah, what a beautiful forest, right next to my wooden house"
"excuse me I have to burn this down, i don't have any coal"
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING OMG YOU JUST BURNED MY WOODEN HOUSE DOWN D:"

Burning down a forest would not be optimal for Charcoal. Also, you would need flint/steel, or lava, etc. The point of the matter is that if I were to need to clear some land, I could do so. I'm already robbed of the trees if I burn them. The idea is simply for alternative ways to get an object, and it seems 'logical' enough in the sense of Minecraft :biggrin.gif:
Also, people by far burn down trees and houses on purpose more than on accident... this change would most likely have no effect on such situations as you keep mentioning.
Yes this would increas griefing in multiplayer giving the griefers a reward for there wrong doing. I support this idea wholy but If I was the admin in a multiplayer server I would want an option to TURN OFF charcoal dropping from burned tree's. I wish there was an item that could controle fire spread (not a mod)
