Recipe for map: quill + paper
Recipe for quill: ink sac + stick + bowl
Recipe for cloning a map: quill + paper + existing map
This adds a use for paper and ink, as well as possibly integrating a mod/mod idea I had read about before regarding ink. And it offers a solution to the map cloning procedure.
Perhaps adding colored dyes to the map recipes might be in order (like blue/green/yellow...), thereby adding more uses for dyes.
This is my first attempt at posting, and I am not sure how often I will be here. I am interested is seeing what others have to say.
Bravo to Notch for making something we all can enjoy, and many thanks to all of you on this forum for giving me some great ideas/solutions to my own construction projects. Keep up the good work. My hat's off to everyone here!
As far as I can tell you would like a player to need a quill and multiple ink colors in order to expand their maps. While this is an interesting idea maybe it could be an option found in some type of 'realistic' mode. I think adding this to the regular game would make cartography kind of a hassle. I would like to just be able to walk around and not have to worry about having enough ink to fill out that big desert. Also, lapiz lazuli is rather rare while water is extremely common.
tl;dr: Cool idea, but having to find enough ink to fill out a large map would be quite difficult / time consuming.

From what I read it sounded like you knew about Notch's plans for maps in the next patch. I'm pretty sure you know this already but since the poster above me didn't seem to think so I'll give you a link to his post: http://notch.tumblr.com/

And welcome to the forums :biggrin.gif:
I already know about the map. I was expecting that the map and piston will be in 1.6

Instead of having to create a ton of ink to fill out maps, you could make a few different colored dyes (blue, green, etc.) and add them together with a quill to make a cartographer's kit, which would always have the ink available.
