I think that Minecraft should have a skill system which gives requirements to equip some tools. This skill system also give fame to the player if Notch releases in-game NPC's. The higher amount of points you have on a certain skill in a skill system should effect have many blocks a tool can break, till, mine, etc before the tool breaks. It should also effect how fast a block specialized for the tools breaks. Finally, it should effect the damage a weapon does to an enemy opponent.
Some cool and essential skills Notch should make would be: Woodcutting, Mining, Smelting/Smithing, Construction, Marksmanship, Melee, Fishing, Barter (when in-game NPC's come out), Theft, Sailing (it should effect how fast a boat can go, should upgrade cannons, increase the size of your boat), Farming, Cooking, and Companion which is a skill
that determines companion health, damage, strategy type (melee or marksman), and special abilities it can unlock
after a certain amount of creature kills.
No, we get the ability to use better tools when we find the materials for it. And we should not be nerfed at the begining of a new world, if anything then mining a certain substance a certain amount of times should allow us to mine it faster. But that's the limit.
