I suggest to add the environment's sounds. In my opinion, it is one of the details that are difficult to detect at the first time, but make modern games more realistic and enjoyable for perception.
For example, a player, being in the forest of temperate climate, can hear the singing of forest birds; being on grassy meadow - the sounds of crickets; on sandy meadow - the sounds of desert insects. On the snowy mountains (ie, at high altitudes in the tundra) player would hear the cool mountain breeze. Frogs' croaking can be heard at small lakes situated in temperate climate zone, seagulls' singing and the noise of waves at sea and so on. Moreover, the most of ambient sounds must be different for each time of day - morning, day, evening and night (e.g. night crickets, cicadas and owls at night, that will stop singing before the sunrise). These sounds must not be heard under the ground like the sound of rain, but permanent cave noise would fill underground voids if a player is inside them (unlike the occasional sounds of mineral resourses that can be heard everywhere). Finally, the sound of the air can be added in game.
As for me, it's a progressive idea.
P.S. Sorry for my bad English. It's not my native language.
Above-ground could use some sounds of life, but underground already has (creepy) ambient sounds. Someone proposed "hallucinations", like hearing indistinct muttering or mob sounds from far off if you're in near-complete darkness too long, that might be cool, at least as a mod.

I enjoy the sounds already present underground, but I feel like we need to have some ambiance down there that doesn't just scare the hell out of you at random intervals. When standing near lava, perhaps a soft rumbling would be appropriate. In caves, the occasional dripping sound would make sense, as well as the sound of air flowing softly.

Sounds like Amnesia, which is always a good thing. This is a bit of a departure from the main idea, but it would also be interesting.

Somebody really needs to make a mod for this.
