With the new maps coming out we are all very excited to see how Notch will implement them into the game. One feature I noticed about the maps that I thought was interesting was, "Any changes you make to the terrain will show up on the maps, but only once someone carrying the map gets near that area. In other words, you won’t magically get to see changes far away on the map".
With this information in mind that means if you are a mapper and go off exploring (and this is especially true on big servers like the one I am running), you can map the land before somebody starts building on it. However, just because somebody builds on the land doesn't mean the map will update, you will still need to use the map and walk over to the area.
Now my suggestion is this, that you should be able to 'lock' the map at its current level of exploration so that it doesn't update. That way we can have old maps of what the land looked like before somebody started building and they will remain that way even if they are being used to explore. I like the idea because I would be interested in making maps of areas before people build there, and then keeping them locked that way so they are not 'tarnished' by whatever changes came later on the server.
I wanted to reply to this earlier, but actually I think I'd rather wait and see how the maps behave before I get into suggestions for them.
You are right not to jump to conclusions, however since this implementation is simple I really would like to test whether or not the idea is palpable and hopefully Notch will integrate the idea if it is agreeable and popular enough.
Do you not read?! People should wait until something is implemented before making suggestions about it. That is, of course, only applicable to specific things we ALREADY know about.
the option for an admin to lock all the maps shouldnt be overlooked either. keeping peoples structures hidden while still showing the spawn comes to mind.
My understanding of it was that a map would only update if you were holding it - ergo, if there was some way to put down a map, be it in a book, on a table or wall, it would be 'locked' anyway. I think that's probably a preferable idea, for simplicity's sake, though I can understand the desire to want to carry around an 'untarnished' map.
Well my server is almost 6 months old now, and with many people playing still the map changes a bit. It would be nice to look at a map and see what things looked like before we started building, and going to the location with the map up would be a problem because then suddenly an old map would get updated. Add to that it is presumably irreversible now I no longer have an old map showing my server's beginnings.

This is also an excellent idea because some servers have a PVP system in place, and hidden bases and areas are important to the game. I am looking to open up PVP areas on my current server, and perhaps get another IP address to open up a PVP server in the future that is separate from my main. If that is the case, I would seriously want mapping to be regulated.

Your thoughts?
Maybe this will help:
tl:dr When making maps you should be able to lock/unlock whether or not it updates. Walla! No more updating map
