I've seen some posts calling for pit covers (i.e. in the cactus spine suggestion) well that gave me a great idea you've all heard of antlions and trapdoor spiders I think that these could be exactly the scare minecrafters need they could build their own traps and never despawn.
Just imagine, one day you're walking across the dessert when you see a deppresion in the ground you walk down to investigate the small hole only to be bit by a giant ant thing. Or perhaps you are walking through the forest and as you cross a small meadow a small patch of ground opens up to reveal a spider of unusual size, even for minecraft
These beasts would remain hostile in daylight but only to the edges of their territory. so the antlion would chase you out of his pit and the trapdoor spider no more than twenty blocks from it's hole.
As to design I think the antlion would be two or three by one and look exactly like it does in that video, With the big pulsating white abdomen, tiny thorax, and ant like head. The trap door spider should be three by three and be lighter colored than regular spiders or maybe reddish brown.
Edit: Whoops forgot to say that I think only one of these should be implimented and that I have a strong preference for the trapdoor spider and also that the TDS should have big fangs
I did a science project on ant lions in the 3rd grade :smile.gif:
Anyways, this is a bit similar to my Death Worm suggestion earlier. Also, why would an ant lion come out and chase you?
Sorry for not noticing your suggestion. I had just surfed the Already Posted Topics page and didn't think to look elsewhere. I do still feel that our ideas are somewhat different. Your idea centers around the giant worm from Star Wars. Which if I remember correctly is a giant, toothy, and tenticaled hole in the sand and as so, fairly obvious even at a smaller size. This is different from an antlion pit which looks like nothing so much as a hole in the grond to a cave surrounded by a pit, and while admitedly would be obvious after you get tricked by one or two it is my second choice as I would prefer trapdoor spiders.
The reason that I feel that trapdoor spiders are both beter than antlions and different from your death worms is the same, it is a concealed ambush predator. they could live just under the ground and the trap door could have the same color of grass and be like pressure plates, slightly raised but hidding that there in a hole beneath them so that any one unwary would be suprised.
Finaly, in answer to your question, I may have been a bit unclear. What I intended to say is that the antlion would chase you so long as you were in the pit, not that it would chase you across the dessert. To make this creature a credible threat in such a small bailwick the hole would be steep, 3:1 or even 4:1 rise(read: fall) to run.
No love? None?
Ah well I guess I will provide one more infusion of information and then it's on it's own.
I think that trapdoor spiders should drop somthing other than string. I am not yet sure as to what but have a few ideas. Fangs would fit them quite nicely but I have no idea what they could be used for as arrows seem covered and knives seem useless. I have also considerd giving the TDS some sort of slow acting poison and having tem drop poison sacs but this might be a bit over powered especaly as you are almost sure to get bit at least once and quite posibly twice. Additionaly I don't see a huge use for poison in minecraft except for alchemy. In the end maybe a fang would be best as a simple prize for having defeated a foe which almost certanly got the drop on you and didn't dissapear after attacking once. After all they might end up hard to find and if they were the only ones to drop something overly usefull it might become to much of a bother.
As to spawn rate and such I think perhaps that they would be as rare as spider jockeys or more rare now I can hear you out there saying "but JW I've never even seen a spider jockey wouldn't this just be another mob that I and many others would know only from stories around the campfire/youtube videos?" Au contraire my friend because these frightening fiends would never despawn you would find them eventualy and to prevent anyone from crashing their world with twenty hidden spiders and a wolf pack of fourty they would not spawn more than one or two in the same chunk.
So I hope that this convinces someone to like this idea.
