Think back to Star Wars. I'm not much of a Star Wars guy, so i'll probably get the terminology wrong, but remember those big worms burrowed into the sand on Tatooine? These are kinda like those, but not as huge.
DESCRIPTION
Ok, so Death Worms are about 3 blocks long to start with. They are semi-rare, not so rare that you'll hardly see one, like a spider jockey, but only slightly rare, like wolves. Death Worms will only spawn in desert biomes. When they spawn they will be above ground, and will move around until they fine atleast a 3x3 area of sand. The Death Worm will then dig about 2 blocks down, and stay there.
Whenever a animal, zombie, uncle bob, ect falls into the hole, the Death Worm will slowly consume it, doing about half a heart of damage a second. When the Death Worm has finished eating the animal, it will regain all it's hearts, and growing one block bigger. Each block bigger the worm grows, it gains another heart. If a creature dies from it, the Death Worm eats all of his/her/it's items. Should the player make it back and kill the worm in time, all of the items will drop back out. The Death Worm drops larvae, which can be used as bait to catch better fish, or eaten to regain 2 hearts.
FIGHTING
There are a few ways to kill a Death Worm.
1. Swords, Axes, Picks, Fists, ect, however, the death worm may have a large amount of hearts, depending on how much it's eaten, and might take a while to kill.
2. Lava will kill the Death Worm quickly, but all the items it has taken from various creatures will be destoyed.
3. TNT is the preferred method. The worm will eat the TNT, killing it as soon as it goes off, and saving the items.
The Death Worm is a bit special as for what it drops. When it dies, everything it ate will come out, meaning your items had you died from him, the meat of some poor pigs, ect. Thus, they are kind of like chests that fight back.
TAMING
Well, to be truthful, you don't actually tame them. You won't have your trusty worm friend following you around. Instead, think of them more like cacti. When you give them cooked pork chops, you can pick them up and place them down as a defense.
I am a huge fan of Star Wars, so when I saw this I smiled. But the worm doesn't really go with the minecraft. I can't imagine just walking around with my iron sword, slaying zombies, pigs, and cows, when HOLY **** A GIANT WORM APPEARS! Maybe as a mod it might work. Just not for vanilla.

Huh? In my mind, giant worms fit in perfectly with a fantasy theme. I guess since Star Wars infused your brain with giant worms = sci fi, it just doesn't work for you.
Minecraft isn't really a fantasy. It is like half fantasy, half realistic. I do not know if there is a word for that. I just feel that it shouldn't be put into the regular minecraft. Like I said, a mod would make more sense.

I do see your point as far as a mod, all tough my knowledge of coding and such is like a fetus trying to do calculus.

You do not have to code or design it. You should think a bit more about your mob. Get everything about it perfect. Once you have done that, make a new thread, and as the title put:
[REQ MOB] Death Worm
or
[MOB REQUEST] Death Worm
This means that you are requesting the mob. If a coder/designer finds that what you have is good, he may create it for you. But you have to get all the details spot on. Hope this helps!

Any reason why? I'd love to know.

I agree. I don't want to have to deal with worms.
