Many want statues in Minecraft. While much of the discussion is on actually carving these statues, this is a more exiting way of doing it that also provides a "boss" mob. The medusa mob is a mob found in dungeons or ruins occasionally when on easy mode and higher. If the player looks at it, they get damaged but are not knocked back. There are ways to fight the mob, once the player kills it you get a "medusa" head (or whatever Notch & team want to call the mob), which can turn various things into statues. Now, to go into a little more detail:
Where to Find It
The mob is found in either dungeons (larger than the current spawner dungeons) or ruins, a possible future update that would be like dungeons except above ground and without a spawner. The medusa mob would only appear on easy mode and above. It wouldn't leave the dungeon/ruins, even to chase the player. If the player tries to enter the ruins/dungeon on peaceful, they are not allowed in due to some "magical force". The mob would come back the same place every time easy+ was switched on. You would not be able to build in the dungeon/ruins until the mob is defeated, nor may TNT, water/lava, or sand?gravel fall in the area.
How to Fight It
It would have 10-20 health, so you'd think it would be easy, but it would actually be very hard. It knocks arrows out of the air with it's iron sword (if it is humanoid, otherwise it might use a tail or something). This means players can't pick it off from a distance. The medusa mob would also be immune to TNT and receive no knockback from snowballs/eggs. It would deal 2 damage per second if it is on the player's screen, although this can be reduced to a half heart by wearing a pumpkin, at the cost of some sight (and a pumpkin). Just because the player turns their back doesn't mean they're safe, however. This mob carries an iron sword and will hit players with it without hesitation, and they won't be able to hit back unless you turn. If players die by the mob they become a player statue where they are standing. All their items will be stored inside the statue for 5 minutes. This way they will probably have to fight medusa again before they can get their stuff back, or be heavily damaged. It would be possible to sneak up on medusa from behind where it wouldn't cause damage but hard because once they strike it'll notice and retaliate.
How It Looks
The mob could either be humanoid (like in Greek mythology) and carry an iron sword, or be some sort of monster, such as a basilisk, using a tail or mouth as a weapon. This is open for discussion.
Medusa's Head
The medusa head would be holdable like all items. When held, any mob the pointer touches that is within 10 blocks and facing you would take 2 damage per second, and if killed by it the mob will turn to a statue. The head, when held, would face away from the player (for obvious reasons). The head could also be placed like a pumpkin, it would do the same damage and turn things to stone. To remove it, the player can go from behind or directly at the side so the face wouldn't show so no damage is done. They have 180 degrees to approach it safely it and can always use their trusty pumpkin if they need too.
Statues
Statues are always the mob standing straight forward, not in walking position or with head tilt. Statues can face in 16 directions, like signs, depending on which way the mob is facing when turned to stone or how the player puts it. They can be mined with a stone pick or above. They are a black and white version of the mob.
Wolves
Can be sitting or standing but no "tame", "wild", or "angry" types (wild is default). I know it sounds evil, but it's not like there is any purpose after you have 20+ wolves, to have any more.
Spider
No passive types (passive spiders are encountered in daylight; default to aggresive).
Skeleton
Would still hold (black and white) bow.
Creeper
Not going to be easy to statue, but It would be awesome to have creeper statues.
Zombie
Nothing unusual about this one.
Skeleton Riding Spider
Both would statue separately, but the spider continues to carry the statued skeleton and if the spider becomes statued first the skeleton remains on the spider, unable to move. When both are statued or the living one is killed, you can mine it. If both are still together, they will stay together after mining and be placed together.
Zombie Pigman
Would still be carrying sword.
Ghast
No idea if it would be possible to use such a large statue, but it could be miniaturized. Another good trophy.
Pig/Cow/Chicken
Nothing unusual.
Sheep
Might not be possible to have "unwolled" sheep, all sheep with wool would go to a generic greyed white instead of 15 different kinds of statues.
Slime
Not sure about this one, being transparent. The game could just remove transparency.
Player
Upon death, the player's items would store in the statue for 5 minutes and release when the statue is mined. It might not be possible to use the player skin, although the skin data could be stored in the same way as a chest.
Medusa
If medusa appears multiple times throughout the world, it is possible (albeit hard) to statue it. This gives an achievement, titled something like "Payback!"
Discussion:
There could be a way to "paint" the statues so that they look like what was "statued" (ex. if it was a zombie then instead of being gray it would be green and look like a zombie). The best way to do it (I think) would be either to put the statue in a crafting grid surrounded by the red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white (bone meal), and black (ink sac), in no particular arrangement, or to put the statue in the crafting grid with the colors of that mob (ex. for a creeper it might be black, white, cacti-green, and light green).
This would be awesome, i love the statues, you could also possibly mount medussa's head and put it on a wall as a nother trophy.
Then every time you looked at it you'd be damaged o.o
What I meant was the "statued" version of each one. If medusa could be statued, the statue would act like a trophy. it wouldn't damage at all.
Quote from mrchicken97 »
And would medussa's head have durabilty, like so many statues until it breaks?
Medusa would be a rare spawn, so you'd only find the mob a few times even after exploring for many days, and you'd have a difficult time killing it, so I don't think it should have durability. Everything else that has durability is "easy" to find, even with diamonds you can find several per chunk.
i rather like this idea, statues would be perfect for graveyards and for every time in multiplayer someone tries to enter my house i just do a one way door in front and have heads as the walls, so 6 medusa heads, and then check it out every day, to find theres another guy who decided to try rob my house, statued and ready for me to add to my ultra collection!!!

The medusa head seems OP... I mean, infinite damage by just facing the monster? How cheap is that? If it shot a limited number of petrifying beams or something, maybe, but just point-n-kill is too much unless there's some kind of limit.
1) Travelling mob that fights dungeons. No matter what it is, it is easy to beat if you know where to find it in a (normal) dungeon.
2) Does not damage the player while on screen if light level is below 1 or 2.
Misconceptions
Medusa does not have a tail or a weapon. Clash of the Titans is NOT mythologically accurate! I wouldn't go on about this if the myth wasn't so much cooler than the misconception.
Medusa is the name of _A_ gorgon, she is not _THE_ gorgon. She had two sisters, Euryale and Stheno. Euryale means "far-roaming". She let out a _very_ loud scream when medusa died. Sthenos means "Forceful". She was around when Medusa became a Gorgon... and has anger issues with men as result of witnessing that little stunt of Poseidon's. Both are immortal, have snakes for hair, turn men to stone, have WINGS, CLAWS, BOAR TUSKS, and both have LEGS.
As the daughters of a sea monster they are strongly associated with water and the ocean, even though they probably don't swim.
My Current Ideas
Easter Egg: A headless Gorgon boss. Apparently, Perseus didn't take the head off of the immortal one...
Euryale: Screams periodically, so you have time to hide, but travels, making her hard to chase down and hard to avoid out in the open. Would possibly keep face covered with wings until she is attacked.
Stheno: This one uses claws a lot, so turning your back isn't a good idea.

I meant that if the Medusa mob was non-humanoid (it could just be some sort of other monster that still has the same effect)
As for the weapon, that would just be so that if you turn your back it can still get you. Using claws for that purpose might be better, but this may be hard to do in a way that looks good.

Please comment and explain what you think and why or answer the poll so I can understand what the community wants and change the suggestion accordingly.
*Poll Vote* my idea for the painting thing is that you can paint it in any color you want to, this could be very interesting, and make each statue unique in some way.
for crafting: say you want to make the head of a player statue green. you would put the statue in the center of the grid and 1 cacti green on each side of the grid at the top. to better show this (The represents the statue)
now repeat that for different colors and statue parts.
you could of course do two parts at once, for example:
this would make the head green, and the legs/feet orange in one go.
or even all three!!:
this would (Of course) make the head green, body blue, and legs/feet orange.
or you could do the original "Unstatued" color using the first poll option at the same time on the side with this.
(i picked all these colors at random btw :tongue.gif:)
You shouldn't take damage just by looking at it. That would be very confusing for many players. You could make it shoot a ray or something as soon as you look at it, so the player knows what's going on.
That might work better. Especially if the medusa mob doesn't look like the medusa from Greek mythology, because then the players wouldn't understand the connection as easily.
Although, if there was a ray instead, players wouldn't think that it was looking at it that did damage, so they wouldn't know to turn around to avoid it.
How about an acheivement that pops up when you fight it, called something like "Don't look!" with a picture of Medusa's head? That would inform the player that looking at the mob causes damage at the same time as giving them an achievement for finding Medusa.
The idea could use some tweaking, but I think a gorgon boss monster would be a fantastic addition to the game. I'm not too sure about the items, though.
If shields are ever added, what if you could craft a 'mirror' shield of some sort that could be used to block the gorgon's gaze? You'd still have to lower the shield and expose yourself to attack, though, so while preparation would help, it wouldn't make the fight too easy.

If the shield doesn't let the player see Medusa while it is up, I don't see why it has to be a mirror shield. If shields were added to Minecraft, holding one up to block the view of Medusa would stop damage.

You make an excellent point; a mirror shield would be rather redundant, and would be a one-trick pony. Regular shields sound perfect.
