If the Dispenser and the Piston had a baby together it would be the Extruder.
The extruder would be a device very similar to the dispenser in that it has storage space for items and releases them when activated by redstone.
Unlike the dispenser though, it doesn't release things as collectible items. Instead it would place a single solid block in the square it faces. If there is already a square placed next to it it would push that square away just like a piston in order to make room for the new block. And just like a piston it would be able to push long columns of blocks.
The extruder would place one block per second, allowing you to place a single block if you push a button or emit a continuous stream of blocks with a redstone charge of longer duration. It would take the blocks from its inventory one at a time, starting with stacks in the upper left corner and working its way down. This would let you control what gets extruded and in what order. The extruder would only be able to extrude placeable blocks, and would ignore and skip over any other items you put in it.
Just like pistons, extruders would only be able to push up to 16 blocks at a time. A longer column would block the device and prevent it from placing any more blocks. Extruders would be able to place obsidian, but like pistons could not push it, so you could use an obsidian block as a way of clogging and automatically stopping the extruder after a certain point.
Extruders could also work well with Allocators if those are added, allowing you to automatically draw blocks from chests and place them elsewhere.
This is somewhat unneeded, because the piston can separate lava and water, to then bring them together to make cobblestone. All this would do is allow more materials to be used. Although assuming it would be crafted with a piston, it would act like the next tier to a piston so I approve.

Yeah. Dispenser + Piston is an obvious crafting recipe. Maybe too obvious.

The crafting recipe could be half-half of each.
