What if there was a kind of TNT that didn't damage anything, and instead of destroying blocks in its blast radius instead filled in the empty spaces around it with blocks?
Since this needs some kind of quasi-logical explanation let's call it the Rift Bomb. You'd make this with the same crafting recipe as TNT except you'd use Soul Sand instead of Sand. When it detonates it creates a rift that brings blocks from another dimension. It wouldn't teleport the player or act like a portal in any way, it'd just create some blocks.
So if you detonate it on Earth it creates a lump of netherrack blocks. If you detonate it in the nether it creates a lump of dirt blocks. The lump would be the same size and shape as a TNT blast radius. This wouldn't replace existing blocks, it would just fill in empty space, though existing walls of any material could block the "blast" and prevent blocks from forming on the other side.
The blast wouldn't injure the player or mobs. Creatures caught in the blast would just be trapped in a them-shaped hollow pocket inside the lump of netherrack/dirt. It'd be easy for players to escape, but it could provide a very effective way of immobilizing mobs for all kinds of nefarious purposes.
What kind of stuff could you create with this Reverse TNT aka Rift Bomb?
*A bridge or island that explodes into existence in mid-air.
*A trap hallway that rapidly fills up with material (useful for challenge maps)
*An instant dam across a wide river.
*A mob immobilizer.
*An auto-rebuilding/self-destroying structure, that has a stockpile of TNT and Rift Bombs to take apart and recreate parts of itself.
*Whatever else people can imagine.
Obviously this isn't something NECESSARY than Minecraft absolutely must have. It's just a fun item to add to the builder toolbox, and it should enable whole new types of buildings and devices. And I think it would be pretty easy to code too.
What would happen if it filled the explosion radius with gravel? Maybe too easy to drown mobs.
That would open up some new purposes, but if it only produced gravel that would preclude a lot of cool things you could do with it if the blocks didn't fall. And if it randomly created either dirt or gravel it'd be too hard to predict it's behavior to use. And I'm worried that some method of selecting the material that's produced would get too complicated.
I like the idea, a device that covers an area in a predetermined block would be pretty nifty. It would make filling in lava pits much easier. I would approve if it was either in game or in a mod, doesn't matter to me.

"That's a nice everything you have there, it would be a shame if something happened to it."
I would have to say, this would go great as a mod instead of being implemented in the game.
I have nothing against mods, but I don't see why it wouldn't work in the main game. It's only a new crafting recipe so if anyone didn't want to use it they wouldn't have to.
I would think a second kind of 'TNT' object that should do this is C4 if it could be added to the game, it is less volatile and more controllable and so should be a suitable replacement.
Ah, but C4 is also a conventional explosive that also destroys things. This is a supernatural device that creates things.
Unique and creative, but I"d like it better as a mod, not ingame. That's my 2 cents :/
I DEMAND 3 CENTS. On topic however, I sort of like the idea. I realize why you used TNT as a base, so people have something to conceptualize with. but other materials might be better suited to this. Perhaps a redstone device made with gold? its durability would be fairly low....maybe...20 uses?

not much else to say on it.

A low powered explosive that can injure creatures but not blocks isn't a bad idea. But yeah, this is magic, not science. Well, maybe a little science.
