Some people have mentioned that the difference between iron armour and diamond armour is too steep. I propose that the inbetween step might be to combine your iron armour with redstone.
This could result in a variety of options:
1: Redstone/iron armour has slightly more damage resistance than iron armour.
2: Redstone/iron armour has same damage resistance as iron armour but actually damages slightly any mob that attacks you while you are wearing it.
3: Redstone/iron armour has same damage resistance as iron armour, but increases player speed and jump height.
4: Redstone/iron armour provides same damage resistance as iron armour but provides a minor heat resistance.
5: Redstone/iron armour provides same damage resistance as iron but acts as a wearable switch.
6: Redstone/iron armour provides same damage resistance as iron but powers a minecart.
7: After a mob attacks you your redstone/iron armour lights up? or lights up when a mob is around?
I don't like the third option much.
I do like the 6th, it would be fun, but maybe too powerful.
Problems: Redstone is cheap. Some of these options might be too powerful for cost.
Not really liking the idea, it is too short and not explained well enough. the concept however has much potential. Redstone infused armour, in my opinion should actually act as a sort of heat resistance. I'm not implying that it could allow you to walk through lava, but more reducing damage from fire and fire like attacks such as explosions. additionally, redstone infused iron could act as a sort of lightningrod, that attracts electricity to it and transfers it to the block below or another lightning rod. this in turn could help to prevent lightning damage to wooden structures, and make for some amazing screenshots, as you can expect where lightning will strike. redstone infused iron should have to be somehow made into an alloy, if that is ever introduced, otherwise crafted normally. Unfortunately i can't give a '+1' to this, but your concept is sound, but your brief suggested uses are not useful. take this idea, develop it, maybe completely overturn it, actually give it some thought, and repost it another day and i might consider supporting this. but for now, i have to leave a here, good luck.

I disagree that the suggestions are too brief. I could mention how much extra armour or how much damage or speed the armour would provide, but the delicate act of balancing such things is beyond my grasp. Beyond that I think the idea is understandable in what I have written
I like the heat resistance idea and will edit my original post to contain it, and would welcome other ideas.
The idea of the redstone infused iron lightening rod is interesting.
I see only 3 possible uses for this idea:
1. Redstone infused boots for powering redstone circuits and wires when walking over them
2. Whole iron armor infused with redstone so it conducts electricity and you won't be damaged by lightning, but could anyway get hit
3. Whole redstone armor would glow in the dark, giving dim ambient light
I like the 1st and 3rd options most. Not sure of over all use of the 2nd, getting struck by lightning even in minecraft is rare, unless the armour attracted it to you, and when it struck any mobs standing near take damage.
