Similar to how you can create "flat" objects like pressure plates, ladders, paintings etc...
I would be great if you could turn wool into the same colored (whatever the color) flat square. This would make it so you could simply lay the "carpet" on your floor, rather than digging up your entire layer of dirt or stone and then replacing it with "blocks" of colored wool.
You could also be creative right on your walls, rather than having the wall actually BE the wool, the "flat" wool would simply be hanging on the wall, similar to a ladder or painting.
How is it a new take? It's exactly the same as every other 'rug'/'carpet' suggestion, albeit with a new name.
One problem with this - with the current system you can't put anything else in a block space that has a ladder/pressure plate. That means no torches on carpets, placing furniture on carpets (though you could work around that, at least), no ladders leading up from carpeted floors, no ladders on carpeted walls, etc., etc.
Torches on carpets is a bad idea anyway...xD

Do you show children your phallus? Is that what you want them to see?

As far as I understand, every single other rug/carpet suggestion has them more like paintings.
Great point about not being able to put torches on it.
Sorry if this was an often suggested idea, I'm sort of new to the forums (My account is old, but I don't surf them too often and thus aren't up to date on the daily things)
