Can't think of any better way to say it.
This is a terrible idea, the fact that it's creator can't even think of a use should be proof enough of that.
Well now that I think about it you could be able to attach a compass to it and it could point to precious metals when you get close and this.so called "metal detector" could be very hard to make by making magnetic rock very rare.

Last time I checked, a magnet would screw up any semblance of accuracy a compass would have.
Also, already suggested, overpowered, and now your thread has 2 bad ideas.
No to the metal items being taken away. The idea as stated above, about it messing with you compass could be a way to find it. I would like to hear of an actual use/craft for this.
Fine, I'll suggest a use, as per the OP's request. (which no one else followed)
If TL;DR: Main ideas are underlined.
Maybe it shouldn't be magnetic to begin with. It would become magnetic when powered by redstone, like an electromagnet. Thus eliminating:

I.E., you could see that they have this magnetic rock, and catch them early. Prohibit guests from having magstone (my new name for it) on a server, and presto, no magnetic griefers.
Also, while it would pull all your metal items toward itself, it would "store" your metal items, in a manner similar to a chest. The items would stick to the rock, but since they are "stored" on the block, the items would not despawn. The items would not spin or hover, as they do when dropped. They would simply be motionless, but flat items (like iron ingots) would still rotate to face the player. The magstone would be able to store an inventory's worth (27 items) of metallic objects. When the redstone is deactivated, the items would simply fall off of the magstone and onto the ground, where they could then be retrieved.
Magstone would not attract iron blocks or ore (or similar blocks) that are placed on the map as blocks. It would only attract from the player's inventory. Magstone would also not attract items stored in an adjacent chest. And yes, magstone would attract itself.
Final thought: The player would have to be in a 2 block radius for items to be attracted. Graphically:
You're quite welcome, because you'd never see a mod try to expand on a topic. (Without demeaning it first)
And you were never worthless to begin with. To me, at least.
I'll try to think of more uses for magstone later today. Perhaps you should do the same.

First, AS many times over.
Second, that is not possible.
Third, griefers.
Please read stickies and use search.
