First: Anyone who has connections to Notch, please try and show him this post!
Second: I love Minecraft, and everything in it so far is great! But, my one complaint is a lack in a variety of ranged weapons and odd enemies. I know there are a number of enemies already, but I had an idea for something quite interesting: were-cows. Here are my ideas for were-cows:
-During the day, a were-cow would wander around and do things like a normal cow. It would look mostly like a cow, but possibly with a different skin or larger horns.
-At night, it would stand up on its back legs, arms out like a zombie, and the face would be looking forward still, not upward. Its eyes would turn red, and it would kill any passive mobs it came across. When it killed a passive mob, the mob would not drop anything. If the player came across a were-cow, the were-cow would attack the player, stealing something of theirs.
-The were-cow would spawn like normal cows, not like an aggressive mob.
-On death, it would drop 0-1 raw porkchops, 0-2 feathers, 0-3 pieces of leather, and 0-1 random pieces of leather armor.
The were-cow could prove hazardous if it spawned in a pen the player had for farming non-aggressive mobs. At night, it would kill the non-aggressive mobs, destroying a vital source for arrows, food, and cheap armor. During the day, the would blend in easily with the other mobs, but not kill them.
Now, the weapons! My idea, you may ask? GUNS! And a crossbow. There would be Four types of guns: The "Musket", the "Rifle", the "Shotgun", and the "Golden Gun".
First, the "Musket". It would be crafted using: 1 stick (the grip), 1 flint (the lighting mechanism), 1 stone button (the trigger), and 3 iron ingots (the barrel). Bullets would come in 5 types: wood, stone, iron, gold, and diamond. They would be made by putting gunpowder below wood planks, cobblestone, an iron or gold ingot, or a diamond gem. Bullets would have a 55% chance of being retrievable, and a 45% chance of disappearing.
The "Rifle" would be built the same as a "Musket", but with a piece of glass above for a scope. The scope (possibly) could be aimed through (this is for Notch to decide), but the "Rifle" would have a significantly longer range than the "Musket", at the expense of not being able to fire diamond or gold rounds.
The "Gold gun" would be made with 1 diamond block (the handle), 1 stone button (again, the trigger), 3 gold blocks (the barrel), 1 piece of obsidian (a sight), and 1 diamond gem (replacing the flint). It would fire gold or diamond shots, or a special diamond-gold shot, made by putting a piece of glow-stone powder below a gold ingot in the middle and a diamond gem on top. The diamond-gold shot would be 25% retrievable, and the gun would do insane damage, but with a limited range. If a were-cow is hit by the diamond-gold shot, it is reverted back to a cow, and may still drop leather armor when killed. Otherwise, it will just do insane damage (ie: enough to kill a spider jockey outright).
The "shotgun" would be made like a "Musket", with a piece of wood plank in front of the button (the pump). It would fire a shot made by putting 3 flint or diamond gems in the middle row, with a piece of gunpowder beneath in the middle. When fired, 9 flint or 3 gems (depending what was used) would cover an area that is 30 degrees, with the apex at the tip of barrel. Each flint would do as much damage as an iron shot, each diamond doing the same damage as a diamond shot, both with a 35% chance of being retrievable. The disadvantage is that, at longer ranges, the spread pattern would cause it to be inaccurate and not effective, though in mines it would be fantastic.
The guns would have a disadvantage: Slow reloading. The shotgun would have the shortest reload (per shot), the Golden Gun the longest (due to its insane damage). The shotgun, though, would be able to fire 6 flint or 2 diamond shells before automatically reloading.
Now, the crossbow. made by placing 3 string in the middle row, 3 sticks in the top, and 1 plank in the bottom row in the middle, it would fire arrows, but in a straight line for longer. Thats about all the crossbow has going for it, though the reload is longer than the Bow.
Thanks for reading my long winded talk! Hope all you miners and crafters enjoy!
PS: If anyone can give me a link to Notch saying "No to guns", that would be greatly appreciated.

WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)
Werecow might work as some kind of zombie pigman-like creature spawned when a cow is struck by lightning, but I don't really like the rest of this article.
Oh yeah, and it should probably only drop Leather, but maybe with higher chances of higher quantities.
Yes you should have read them, it explains that guns and sword variants have no place in a sandbox. RPG Minecraft doesn't fit with it's sandbox style. It's about the free form of the game that makes it what it is, missions mean that players get distracted from diamonds or makes them focus holey on them and not letting them do whatever makes their game good.
I never said anything about missions. Where'd you see that? And what is wrong with guns? I can understand the "Sword variants" part, but guns can be ignored. I think I'll remove sword variants, but the guns I'm keeping. They should be let in, as they will help make fighting enemies at night easier. Sadly, a rifle isn't going to do much when a creeper charges from a corner you didn't see it in. Guns have their disadvantages, though.

Guns are a bit too high-tech, and overlap with the Bow as a ranged weapon.

They are high-tech, but they would be extremely hard to get. Especially the Golden Gun. God I would love to have that thing. Also, these aren't 20th century weapons. These are Muskets, which were around in the 16th and 15th century. At that time, they were rare and looked down upon as the tool of the devil. The bow and sword were still used for a while when the gun was around. Plus, I looked around on the "read this before posting" things, and I saw nothing about a "NO GUNS" rule, nor a "NO NEW SWORD VARIANTS" rule. I also love how no one has commented on "Were-cows". Are we good on those then?

Muskets are still high-tech for Medieval Minecraftia. Also the guns, especially the Golden Gun, wouldn't be hard to get, if you look at the requirements, you'd find the gold on the way to the diamond and have enough diamond left over to make another once you find more gold which you probably will before abandoning the caverns to find another magma lake to find more diamonds. And then any of the other resources are insanely collected along the way offering hundreds, if not thousands of these weapons depending on the play style.
The "gold-on-way-to-diamond" thing was kind of intended, but, since I have never found gold, I thought it would be hard to get. Since I changed it to gold blocks, that will be a total of 27, count 'em, 27 gold ingots! Now, no matter who you are, that'll be tough to get. Plus, 1 piece of Obsidian can be difficult to get, then the diamond-gold shot (I need a better name for it) is now only 25% retrievable (25% chance you can get it back). Also, I need an idea for a hard-to-obtain block for the Golden Guns handle.

Just a heads up, I included the Werecows concept in another post of mine. Just though I should tell you that.
Wait, you had the idea before me, or you put my idea in one of your posts? Please tell so, if you had I first, I can give you credit. And please don't lie.

Notch said no to guns. Put this in your little brain, glue it down if you have to, and remember it because it's NEVER EVER going to happened.
Can you give me a link?

I put your concept in my new post. I acknowledged that it wasn't my idea, but I didn't give specific credit because I forgot to note your name.
Anyway, the post is titled "Lightning Mutations", if you're interested.
