I see there are some map suggestions about already, and some discouragement on talking about it, however i think it is definitely worth having a chat about what as a community we would like to see so Notch can implement it as close to the consensus first time.
So i thought i would start a subject on how people would see the map being crafted, my current suggestion is;
canvas

where is paper;
This would make 1 canvas -
Alternatively, for more traditional feel, you could use cow hide instead.
next you would make a quill -
As per The Arts Suggestion
to make a map;

where is a compass, is a quill, and is a canvas - these could be in any order
once you have a map, i think the crafting a clone of it should be pretty simple;

where is coal (in this case, charcoal for a rub tracing), is a canvas and is an existing map. you would get 2 maps identical maps as a result.
This is how i see the crafting working, as then we have new items ready to be used for other stuff, as Notch was talking about paintings, and notes.
In future you could use Paper and quill to create a note, and canvas, quill and inks/dyes would allow you to make a painting. See the the The Arts for a more detailed suggestions.
I think my crafting for maps system's pretty expensive, but overall, maps are a pretty complex thing, so i think they should be expensive.
Let me know what you guys think of my crafting idea for the maps feature? Do u like it? how would u change it?
Not to be a downer tho, crafting maps and the likes are probably already all planned out and half way coded. So it is somewhat of a moot suggestion. It was an interesting read tho and the ideas are plausible so it could be that is how it will work.
We will just have to wait and see when the patch goes live.
there is an interesting suggestion for Art in the game if you haven't already read it that I'm sort of hoping is the direction that takes when its is added. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=284884 Oh it also covers books and parchments.
You think any of these suggestions are going to have any impact on maps when they get coded in? Notch barely reads this stuff, if at all.
thoughts unsaid, are thoughts unheard - you never know if notch or any of mojang will drop by, probably not,

Not at all, i know this may very well be the cause, but i figured that notch's latest tumblr entry, didn't seem hugely affirmative on features and functionality - i've no idea how mojang develop features, but personally, i would be programming the item, 'give'ing it to myself for testing/debugging, and figuring out the functionality, long before worrying about little tid-bits like the crafting forumlae.
That's awesome (and much more indepth than mine), looks like they cover most of the same concepts; I quite like, the ink, bowl and feather for a quill, and that would also work for dyes+feather+bowl for different coloured quills. I hope Notch makes maps crafting in a more creative way like i've suggested, using similar bits as the The Arts - More Creativity in Minecraft [Images] [Part 2!] suggestion.
Yeah, who knows when the update will be, fun to chat about it until it happens, and you never know, maybe the chat will trickle through, - again, probably not, lol
