I have read Notch's blog about maps, and I am very excited for this update! I just want to throw some of my ideas into the ring:
Placed maps: You can place a map like a painting (But also on ceilings and floors). More zoomed-out maps will make larger maps when placed. (Fully zoomed in being one square, and then scale with each zoom level.) Once placed, maps will not update, unless you destroy the map and walk around with it.
When you place 2 maps next to each other whose contents overlap*, they will merge (Like double-chests), and the new spliced image will be centered in the map.
And speaking of merging maps, also splicing maps in inventory? If their contents overlap* and their zoom levels are the same, they can be crafted into one map, more zoomed out to fit the whole contents.
*When I say 'their contents overlap' I mean the area that the map encompasses. E.G., if 2 maps are 100x100 blocks, and their centers are less than 100 blocks away, they will be overlapping. This can lead to some weird-shaped maps, but in that case, you can explore into the blank areas like a normal map.
I would absolutely love to be able to place/ merge maps. I would map out all of the land around my home and make a 'map room.' =D
So, what do you all think? Please, if you hate it, at least tell me why. Thank you!

I think it's a pretty damn good idea. And Notch has added Mod's / Idea's in to a build of the game before, who knows. It is a neat idea to place maps on your wall. Kind of like a white house situation room, or the map of your "Territory" or Kingdom or what have you.

This is why we wait until the dang update comes out before suggesting ways to improve/change it!
Wraiths: Boss-like mob for Hard!
Yeah, I'll add that into the OP.
