Craft your standard chest, and put a piece of paper in the middle of the recipe.
= paper
This chest is different, because whatever item is being stored in the top left hand corner will have it's sprite appear as a symbol on top of the chest.
This is useful when players want to quickly and easily convey whats in a chest when they don't have the ability to have signs. This would also go well with the upcoming adventure mode.
If you want to know what's in the chest, make a sign, as was already mentioned. If you can't make a sign, then pray tell, why can you make a chest?
1 Chest costs 8 wooden planks to make. (12 if you count the crafting table)
1 Sign costs 6.5 wooden planks. 6 for the top part, half of a wooden plank for sticks since 2 makes 4. (10.5 counting the workbench).
So, total, making 1 chest and 1 Sign (and thus, the required workbench), costs a grand total of 18.5 wooden planks. Round that up to 19 of course, make it 20 just for the hell of it, and that gives you what, 5 wood blocks (logs)?
If you can't find a 5 block high tree, yet can find reeds for your paper idea, there's a major problem here.
Also, Shelves mod. It makes it only a 3x3 storage area, but it shows the sprites of everything, not just ONE thing. Here is where your idea would fail.
What would happen if you put different items in the chest?
Does it spaz out between the multiple sprites?
Does it take only the top left one?
What about doublechests?
Would it take both top left slots of each chest half as a sprite, thus, flashing between both of them?
Why not make a display case instead?
[]
You can right-click it to open it like a chest, but you only have a single spot to store an item. It ends up looking like a halfstep of wood, covered in glass. Inside, is the sprite of whatever item you put in it.
Breaking the display case gives you 1-3 and the item that was inside, but no glass.
Light would go through this, since part of it is glass.

It's more for spacial reason than anything. It also looks cool, and is useful when vendoring in SMP. A double chest will display the same symbol, unless another item is placed on the lower right hand corner.
And yes, different objects can be placed in the chest. They just don't show up on the sprite.
I like this idea a lot!
*Gives a diamond*
This is perfect for saving on signs.
It's not really about signs though. More about being compact, and using minimalistic ways of conveying whats in a chest. Glad you like it though :biggrin.gif:

The sprite would also appear on the front.
If you can make a chest... shouldn't you be able to make signs?
It is a good idea, because then you wouldn't need to look UP at a sign and then open the chest.
:\
This is a rare occasion, but it does happen, espicially in storage rooms.
Bump.
