Very very simple suggestion.
How about using bone meal on dirt makes grass grow on it regardless if there is any grass around. This would make grass in/on top of houses, one/two block grass lines and under ground mob farms a lot less annoying.

I once suggested planting seeds on untilled soil for grass,Though AS ALWAYS my ideas are buried then dug up by someone who butchers them,You didn't butcher it though,You suggested BONEMEAL.

It would also be less logical,Why would throwing ground bones on a pile of dirt make grass grow?
MAYBE if it was connected to another grass block...
Planting a seed however,That means you're putting GRASS on the block,Not BONES.
Possibly more logical. You see... there would most likely be some grass seed still in the dirt, seeing as all you did was punch it. This means that all you need is a catalyst to increase it's growth rate.
