This suggestion is something for the redstone builders amongst us, especially those of us who want to make computers in Minecraft (not to mention, it could also be a useful circuit debugging tool).
It's a new type of block which glows brightly (regular torch or brighter) when a redstone current is applied to it.
Suggested crafting formula:
= Glass = Glowstone Dust = Redstone Dust
Maybe combine it with coloured wool to get different coloured light sources?
For mundane uses, you could have electric lighting for your house, and I think somebody suggested a light sensor, which could be hooked into such a system to make the lights come on automatically when it gets dark.
Now, as to whether or not this should conduct electricity or not, at least, beyond the initial connection, I'm not sure. I can see advantages to having adjacent blocks acting as conductors (lighting strips), but it could also complicate making pixels for computer displays.
Redstone Torch does this for the most part. I agree we need more light sources but I'd prefer a different route.

1. Redstone torches don't produce much light.
2. Redstone torches glow the opposite of their input power supply.
3. These light blocks would be visually distinct from torches, which would be very useful for showing which output is active at a given time.
