A crossbow rigged to shoot automatically at any hostile Mob that comes within range. It would build a parameter for a place you don't want mobs to just walk or follow you into.
Possible Features/Uses: Create a safe place to escape zombies Two inventory slots to bring the arrow capacity to 128 arrow before refilling Range of about the same as the skeletons Maybe a third slot for coal to make flaming arrows
__ or for TNT arrows with a smaller explosion (full strength would be too much) Appearance would be like wooden crossbow on a rotating wooden base (1 block) like DaVinci would make
This device would handle those pesky mobs from simply walking in on you and would be amusing to watch, possibly from behind a glass observation/safe room. If I'm not mistaken, there aren't any big downsides to this idea and it would be both helpful and entertaining.

Wheres the fun in that? The mobs have to walk in front of and step on a pressure plate for that to work. A narrow area is needed for that to work well. With an auto-turret, It can be used in a more open area, or even flat plain. It's also wouldn't be as much of an eyesore as despensers, redstone curcuits and pressure plates everywhere, especially if you want it to be around your house.

That's the point. It shouldn't be like an auto fire CoD sentry gun because it robs the game of any strategy.

I don't understand what makes you think its "non-minecrafty" sniggyfigbat. If you want to attack the idea, at least provide a reason other than "It's just a plain bad, non-minecrafty idea".
Its would be strategic in how you place it. If you want to bog it down with weaknesses to make it more challenging, I completely understand. Make the range really short, make the storage capacity something like 15 arrows to require more interaction, make it need a gunner to mount it (if i didn't make this clear, it would be stationary).
I like this idea, so please explain it's fault a little.
Better idea: Someone once proposed being able to craft golems that could perform simple tasks if given tools, so maybe they could act as ranged sentries if you gave them arrows/bows?
Hmm....A golem given a sword/bow and an area to guard would be fine for me. Even if he could only follow you and act as a guardian would still be good. A guard dog/wolf works too.
The main point is that there be some kind of defense against a zombie sneaking up and killing me before i am aware. For that matter, scrap the crossbow and make a siren/alarm to warn of mob intruders.

Actually, the golems were supposed to stand in place when equipped with a sword/bow. Either way, they would make one cool-looking security system.

Standing still works fine with me, especially if the mobs attention is drawn to them instead of me. Dress them up in armor and make them look like Shrek when he was in armor lol. It's !

Just use dispensers and pressure plates.

I HATE SIGNATURES MADE BY PEOPLE WHO THINK THEY'RE BEING CLEVER.
