Notch has talked about his desire to add to the game's adventure aspect, increasing the opportunity and incentive to fight monsters in hand to hand combat rather than just drowning them all in traps.
Obviously there are a lot of ways to do this, but I have one simple suggestion that he could throw into the mix.
Add a few, very rare, extremely dangerous biomes that follow different "laws of Minecraft". These biomes would be like the advanced levels of minecraft. You wouldn't want to go there right away, not until you're armed and armored. And players would never initially spawn in one. If you spot one of these biomes early on you'd want to avoid it until you're ready (but keeping in mind where it is so you can find it again).
How would the game rules be different there?
Each adventure biome could have one or more unique quirks that present a different challenge. These are just examples, not necessarily what should be used, but this should give you an idea of what I mean by different rules.
Volcano Biome - Ash choked sky makes it dark enough for monsters to spawn even in the day.
Canyon Biome - Windy conditions have a chance of occasionally putting out torches, turning them into "extinguished torches" that must be picked up and placed down again to relight.
Swamp Biome - Hostile mobs can spawn on the surface of water as well as on land
Jungle Biome - Trees can sprout from the ground even without saplings, and as trees grow they can replace other solid blocks in their way, potentially ripping through the walls of your buildings.
Meteor Crater Biome - Enemies that spawn here have mutated to have more health and only take damage from swords and arrows, and not from cacti/drowning/falls/etc.
Spider Nest Biome - A forest covered in webs that spawns always hostile spiders 24/7.
Ancient Tomb Biome - Skeletons and zombies can spawn in all light conditions.
Etc.
Why would you go to these adventure biomes?
There could be a variety of rewards. Perhaps there could be additional kinds of rare ores to mine, or special enemies that only spawn there and have unique drops, or there could be dungeons with reward chests. There are so many options that it would be meaningless for me to speculate too much. One obvious option is to just make certain ores that already exist more common there, for example diamonds might be found more easily and closer to the surface in a volcano biome.
Anyway, that's my 2c. What's your thought on this?
An interesting twist to biome specific hazards. I really like this idea. I would like to see at least some of it implemented into the game. It would give us more of a reason to wear armor.
I don't care if the rare ores were only for decoration like lapis lazuli. The more blocks we can build with the better Minecraft gets. Hazards just give us new ways to obtain ores than just randomly dig through stone. Really it isn't that different than mining obsidian.
The idea has flaws that make it hard to implement, but I support its core concept.
i think this would add plenty to minecraft the only thing that id suggest is that there are different biomes in the nether as well like say a pigmen tribe[note. i do realise that that is not really considered a biome but how about there's like different terrain like a new type of block i don't know what we would call that block but it would like something that's artificial] that's all i would like to see

Sure, this could work for the nether too, if the nether ever got its own biomes. But in a sense the nether already is one of these special adventure biomes, with different mobs and unique terrain and materials. What I'm suggesting is that you can have different mobs and game rules within the same dimension.

I'm against biomes in the Nether. The Nether is unnatural. It needs more content though.

Do you show children your phallus? Is that what you want them to see?
Me likey. I think there should be some rules on what trees can and cannot break through in Jungle though. No way it should break through Obsidian, hundreds of TNT kegs can't do it. I think anything that is an Iron Block or harder (note, Iron block, not regular Ore) should be able to resist tree growth.
Also I agree the Nether is fine biome free. It is supposed to be one vast, dark, dangerous place. That being said, more Nether content.

Obviously I like these biome ideas since I came up with them. But obviously there are some bugs to work out.
And I'd be happy even if Notch didn't follow these specific biome ideas at all, as long as we had dangerous adventure biomes of any type.

Things like jungle and spider nest are beast, other ones no... I.E Meteor Crater would be a hassle to code, the canyon one would just be stressful, ancient tomb makes no sense...

Yes that is a bad idea.

Yeah, I know that some of these biome ideas are better than others.
But these biomes are only hypothetical examples to illustrate a point. They're not actual suggestions. I'm not saying "add these specific biomes", I'm saying "add biomes with different game rules like stronger monsters, different spawning conditions, etc."

Well, I'm not really suggesting these specific biome ideas. Just the broader concept of different biomes having different game rules.
