Similar to singleplayer servers, someone starts it, and with the LAN option, others on his same network select the game he's started and get logged in within 1,000 squares of eachother
LAN is Local Area Network. (I.E. Not Online)
Multiplayer for people to play OFFLINE.
Multiple people on one network, but not having to log onto a multiplayer server to play together
You can set up a server to play offline if you have a router and LAN cables for each computer. Me and my friends have done this several times with one computer acting as the server, and using the others to play on.
This is the exact same thing as current MP. Except instead of going from your PC to your Router to Internet (through various connections and gateways blah blah blah internet crap) to their Router to the PC hosting, you go from your computer directly to other computer, or from yours to router to theirs.
Not exactly new tech here.
