Since the search bar always seems to be down for me, im just going to post this suggestion since i didnt see it in the other thread showing already suggested ideas.
Basically, you lock a compass on some placed red stone dust, and the compass always points to that specific point. When locked, you can rename the compass to a significant phrase so you know where it points to. This can be useful when exploring areas far from your spawn point so you can find your way back to it when you leave.
And, no. I don't like it. This kind of stuff is for lazy people who don't bother making paths or rails or torches to figure out how to get places. Or get lost. In which you use a compass. AS IT IS.

What? of course it points to the spawn location, but by changing where it points you can record new locations. and how many people do you know likes leaving this huge path of torches or other distinguishing objects to tell how to get someplace? It doesn't sound like 'laziness' to me. It sounds like 'convenience' since all you need is the compass and you can find the location easily enough. Breadcrumbs wouldn't be needed for those who have the resources to make the compasses.

Most people DO leave some sort of path when they go somewhere far away. EVERYONE I KNOW who plays Minecraft does that. It's common sense. And besides, between a bunch of torches and a compass, I'd have the torches. No mobs.
Also, convenience is basically being lazy in a justifiable way. This is not particularly justifiable.

Torches aren't the sun, mobs will still spawn regardless. and maybe everyone you know does that simply because there is no other way of recording locations besides leaving breadcrumbs. as for convenience and laziness, i guess using swords and and bows in place of your fists because there more powerful is also laziness then? tools are there to make everything easier. if i had to choose between between a single compass and laying dozens of torches, i would choose the compass.
I dont leave bread crumbs when I go explore because of this I get lost all the time, but I also don't carry a compass. I sort of like it as I get tried of my compass resetting when I lose my spawn point for what ever reason.
Step 1: Press F3
Step 2: Write the XYZ coordinates of your location on a sheet of paper
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit!
Some might consider using F3 cheating (even more so now that you can see mob ID tags.)
I would like it if you could set the block your compass points to with right-click. It's annoying that the compass always points to your original spawn, even if you have a bed.
No to multiple compass locations. That would be annoying and difficult to code.

True, but not everyone likes to use that (cause it is kind of cheating to them).
I would rather make the compass actually point North rather than your spawn point. Especially with the glitch where it does not adjust to the bed being your new spawn until you die and lose your compass. That needs to be fixed.
Also, they need to fix how if you die during the day you don't respawn at your bed. That is a bad glitch too.

Not a glitch. The compass is not supposed to point to your new spawn. It stays at your old spawn to stay in a consistent place and not mess with your bearings everytime you want to temporarily move your spawn point elsewhere.
I think it would be good if you could use the compass to choose where it points, instead of being related to the spawn point.
Edit: Maybe have an extra needle to show your chosen point. Everybody's original spawn is in the same place so all players' compasses point to the same place for conformity, right?

The compass already points to your spawn point.
And there's this thing called google.
