I realize prediction of weather has been suggested, but I have something slightly different.
People have suggested the idea to look at clouds and predict the weather. I personally think knowing when a thunderstorm might hit shouldn't be free. It would be best as an item to bring with you, so you can see how much time you have before you need to find shelter.
To try and stick to the current system of recipes being the shape of the object. I thought to include the low-tech, but reliable, hygrometer (humidity) and barometer(air pressure). The two are in one item, of course, for convenience. =leather =string =redstone torch =pressure plate
[]
The string is the hygrometer, as it grows in length slightly in raising humidity.
Leather is used as the barometer. It is shaped in a bubble, which expand in lowering air pressure (sign of a storm).
these are then attached to a handle, so that they be held without disturbing measurements.
I'll explain the redstone and pressure plate, now.
But wait, not everybody understands how to read amateur meteorological instruments!
Luckily, you have attached use pieces of a pressure plate to be activated by the changing string and leather.
This will activate a redstone light, visible while holding the item. If the light is off, like a negative torch, no weather is imminent. The light will turn the color of a lit redstone torch when regular rain or snowfall is on its way.
Finally, if the light turns a bright red (without emitting real light), a thunderstorm is coming!
The redstone also prevents people from getting this slightly advanced item to early.
The light will turn on when weather is within 5 minutes, enough time to find shelter or get back to base.
This idea isn't too complex, with only one item ID, and no changes to the cloud textures. However, weather in Minecraft is randomized differently, appearing completely with out much warning even in the code. Therefore, the item would be included in to the code that says "activate any Weather stations, and after five minutes, begin weather effect." (of course that would be put in Java)
If you have any feedback, please avoid the 1 word answers. I really would like to know if there are any major flaws, other than that weather prediction isn't new.
but it should be easier to make, like instead of redstone torch, a regular torch! I just think it should be like a sword or pickaxe, like one of those ones you first lean about!
Love the idea of seeing when a storm was comming, what if it was 2 items for just crafting purposes.
like a sort of Antennae or something that you place and a second item (not sure on the recipe maybe Iron/gold/redstone mixture to give us ANOTHER use for Gold)

[] [] Flower is redstone
the antennae would be placable and the other item could be handheld (compass, clock) and turn different colors to show the weather.
How does the antennae predict the weather? I kind of want to add gold, but would make this a little to expensive. Redstone is as common as iron if you go deep enough.

The reason for the regular torch is to make sense. It can be affected by the instruments, with the pressure plate.

Just a thought, thats how I envisioned it.
