Idea: I think a teleporter that works like nether teleports would be handy that zap you from one part of the map to another (or one part of the nether to another) - not between world and nether (since we already have that). The idea is that it would allow massive map exploration, and be similar to running rails everywhere anyway.
Placement: To make it worth while it would only allow a minimum and maximum distance to teleport to (e.g. must be 2400-4800 blocks apart - which I think is about half a days walk? My math is terrible!). Basically placing the portal would activate it (without need to ignite it), if it's within the distance tolerance from its paired item.
Pairing: You would craft a special gate using the crafting block to make a 3x3 obsidian block with a particular element in the middle. Make 2 of these and then you have a two-way placable portal between those two items. They then become a unique item - you cannot use the same element again to make another portal (it won't create). The portal would look like the nether portal (smaller, since it's got less obsidian), except a different colour based on the type of item in the pairing.
Recipie: you would need two of these:
Cost: Portals would be expensive to make so you don't go overboard making millions of them - so the recipie would be based on blocks: gold block, diamond block, redstone block, glowstone block, lapis lazuli block etc.
Stacking: Portals would not stack in inventory.
Recovery: You would be able to recover the portal in the same way as you do with a minecart - hit it until it pops and turns back into an item. It would only recover if you used a diamond or gold tool, otherwise it would be destroyed.
Other effects: The sound made by portals would be attractive to unfriendly mobs. You might pop out expecting to do some mining or exploration and find an encampment of spiders ready to attack. This would make portals less attractive as a way to flee attacks, while in peaceful mode would allow map explorers (those who do not play, rather explore and build) a nice easy way to jump between creations or zones.
Yes, I searched: I realise the idea of portals has been raised a number of times and the usual crowd have ranted and raved and posted "use search" as they mistakenly believe it is useful or thoughtful. I believe with the minimum and maximum distance and mob-attractor it is different enough to previous portal ideas I have searched and read.

No, I will not subscribe to your channel because you asked... but I might if it's *good*.
i guess when I see an idea in the forum that I do not like, I don't reply to it at all.
That way the only things that a suggestion is made of is made up of constructive comments.
-__- how can you first say that minecraft wasn't made with me specifically in mind, and then talk about how you expected me to behave how you say you behave in a forum . . . ?
I guess we have different ideas of forum interaction (as many people who have expressed disinterest in ideas seem to have). Negative criticism isn't automatically not constructive. I think your idea subverts a good element of the game and I said so. You really think that's outstanding behavior?
Hard to think you're doing anything but being provocative against me not liking your idea by saying something like that.

the nether being compressed space is your fast travel mechanism that requires taming before you can use it.
I like that better
I agree.
and I don't, hence the suggestion. By the way, the game was not made for you specifically in mind.
but my account was made specifically for the opinions in my mind to be shared.
Please don't get defensive, I'm tired of that ****. I don't like it, you don't have to care if I like it or not. ffs
