I have had some problems because the elements of a redstone circuit take alot of space. Therefore, I propose a new "Circuit" or "Circuitboard" object, which could be placed on the floor or a wall (like a torch). Each circuit block would be entirely unique, crafted by the player.
To craft these, the player would need a crafting table similar to the current one, except with a 5x5 grid. This crafting table could be used for two things: making the elements of these compact circuits and making a circuit out of those elements.
Compact circuits would be able to have a max of one wire coming from each side. This way, if another piece of circuitry or redstone circuit is adjacent on that side, there is only one input/output. The crafting table I have thought up would look something like this...
NOTE: Green blocks are spaces in the grid. Red blocks are contacts on the sides of the circuit where a wire can be attached for input/output. Blank squares don't have anything in them.

I realise this would take a whole lot of work, and that many players may be unwilling to deal with the kind of complexity it presents. However, it would provide a mental challenge for those who are playing Minecraft for a mental challenge, and would provide convenience for those who want to build something complex with redstone.
