Why not have a switch that activates under sunlight (or lightstone placed nearby).
it could be made with one piece of glass, one redstone dust and one piece of iron.
They would be stacked in that order one on top of the other in the workbench.
The effect of this switch would be that either it turns on when lights hits it or turns off (right click to change that setting) and when the switch is in the "on" position it would act just like a redstone torch.
This would be a cool item to have in order to light houses or areas when the sun goes down among other uses with the addition of future powered blocks like gates or some type of shutter that allows light in and out. Could place shutters on a roof, let them open to let sunlight in during the day, close at night and turn on lights in the building.
