I was thinking Minecraft could have the chisel added into the game. Upon using the chisel on a block of stone or cobblestone, you would pop up windows on a variety of what to craft it into. You could also use the chisel on stones in your inventory. For example, you could make a block thats cut in half diagonally, which would be great for having smooth roofs that slope down or for making ramps as an alternative to hopping or climbing stairs everywhere. Or you could craft the block into a pyramid shape for putting a steeple on your house. Here is how I believe the chisel could potentially be crafted

I just believe that a LOT of people play Minecraft for building beautiful things. And as a side note, i was thinking if you wanted to craft stacks of the same design, a workbench of some type could be added into the game. For realism, you could just sit there with your chisel while it automatically crafted your stack of blocks into a stack of a different shape. Here is a potential way to craft it.

Please let me know what you think about this, for obvious reasons I don't believe this same logic should work on materials such as sand. But, it would be pretty cool if your house could have a solid gold steeple.
P.S. For anyone who cares to read further, this is what I believe the workbench's interface could look like:

Or possibly, if this becomes something that needs to be done in great mass, you could set up 4 stacks of stone to be turned into 4 different shapes, or all in the same shape;

You just place your materials in the left side, and pick the design you want for each of up to four stacks, then press a [start] button that could be placed on the bottom of the window so that it wouldn't begin until you picked were finished choosing your options. Then your character would craft each piece in 1 or 2 seconds and you could go grab a sandwich while he / she transforms your 4 stacks into more intricate pieces. These would include right triangles, equilateral triangles, and various curvatures that could be used for things like putting an arch on your doorway or windows. I don't doubt that this concept make clash with some of the games programming, but there are already odd shapes like stone steps that you can stack things on top of pretty well. So I don't think it would be so bad if you were balancing a few blocks on a pyramid.
if you approve of this idea Broken
By the way, I didn't read the forums on this much, so I'm sorry if this idea was already mentioned.
Yeah, I understand that completely, at the very least I think it would be cool to have the ability to craft ramps. They would also provide more fluidity to minecarts traveling downhill and people would love to put them on their houses for making roofs that are a little more unique.
As a side note, let me just mention that I'm very happy with Minecraft and I've been playing over the course of several months. If an idea like this never came to fruition, I would still build the squarest, blockiest house on the planet and stand atop it with pride heh. Thanks for your reply.
Thats true, and I would never want to compromise the graphical integrity of the game. But the wonderful thing about it is that the chisel can be a sidebar, and optional tool, and not something you require for establishing a home. Its like a piece of "endgame" content for sharpening your living quarters. But I wouldn't be a fan of it being portrayed as a more required tool like the shovel and pickaxe are. I love the way this game is designed and I wouldn't even want him to add slopes and things into the landscape. I just think it would be cool if I could have a slick roof and how nice it might look to run water or lava down it.
Well negativity will just push people away, and I'm here to support my idea. But the main scope of it was NEVER to add ramps and slopes in naturally, merely to have the ability to craft stone or other hard materials into different shapes for having things like a row of spikes on your roof, or a big steeple.
By the way, just so you know, I thought of this because my friend and I are trying to make a full scale model of Hogwartz lol and we're having trouble figuring out how to design a lot of it with only cubes at our disposal. But, the challenge is always part of the fun, so I hope Notch never makes it too easy on us *cough* TNT cannon *cough*

As for ramps and all...Meh. Mod it.
