I'm not sure if this has been suggested before - darn you missing search function! - but I'll suggest it anyway :smile.gif:
I'm currently reading for my physics exam, and atm. just reading about power generation and power stations, and thought: Hey, What if we in minecraft, were able to build power stations, and thereby have a longer running source of energy, than redstone (is it 16 blocks it reach?), and we were able to use different materials, to get power (just like in the furnace, where different things, burns for longer).
This would bring about new uses for:
Wood,
Coal,
Water,
Lava,
and Netherrack.
Also this would give birth to new craftable items: Wire - which can transport electricity (which optionally could hurt a player, like real electric shocks) for longer distances.
and Light bulbs (maybe different types, like florescent lights, regular light bulbs, and other types), which could maybe light up a cave better than torches, and give a different feel - rather than always having the kind of medieval feel of torches :smile.gif:
This would also need spinning objects, for the turbine :smile.gif:
Please tell me what you think - I think it could be funny, and would bring a new aspect to the game :smile.gif:
(This idea is not 100% developed, but came to me very spontanious)
I'd think that power involving some kind of electricity has already been mentioned loads of times before.
Besides that, I think minecraft is a more fantasy based genre. I'll put it like this, in The Elder Scrolls do you ever see guns, or any other kind of electricity. It just doesn't fit. Minecraft just isn't set in the present.
You may see mods or skins based on robots, or daft punk. But those are customizations but the user and such.
It just wont happen...
Do you know how an generator works? I learned two years ago, in the sixth grade.
An electric current runs through a wire, causing a magnet to spin rapidly. The mechanical energy then gets converted to electrical alternating current. We don't even have magnets yet. There is also no way to do this.
Power generation should be in a much more primitive version my friend. Minecraft cannot host a technology hat will ruin it, so please stick to Redstone.
This is very simplified (must be buildable for all), but:
You would have a water tank (e.g. made of glass), beneath that a heating element (e.g. made of iron, or just open flames heating the bottom of the tank).
At the top of the tank, a tube made of e.g. glass, could look like this:
[]
Which transport the steam, at the end of the tube, a turbine (or some other construction - which ever is most convenient). From that turbine you have the electrical output.
The extend of the design of a power station, is up to the individual player - bigger tanks for water, leaves players with having to re-"fuel" less often, but also the time needed to heat the water, is longer, thus making power production take longer time, but also lasting longer :smile.gif:
Yes, I stress - It IS simplified, but not all players are engineers, neither am I,
but I still think it could be fun, with having to consider where my power comes from, and in which form :smile.gif:
And as mentioned, this could give another use to netherrack, and making trips to the nether more worthwhile :smile.gif:
Eh... Actually, I have seen electricity in the Elder Scrolls. Ever used thunder magic?
Anyways, I don't think this idea is good.. I mean, we already have power generaters, disguised as redstone torches.
The repeater allows easy, long range redstone relays.
The shocking wire idea might be nice. Redstone now gets a purely redstone offensive ability!

I was actually referring to generated power. Thunder magic is just magic, not a useful power source.
