If there is one thing Minecraft is sorely lacking, it is mobs that are rare enough to be worth searching for; for the most part, you can have encountered every mob in the game within a few Minecraft days, if you're willing to go hunting for wolves in their special biomes. This makes it so that all of the mobs become old and stale, offering nothing new or fantastic to gameplay; this is why peope create monster traps, because fighting monsters becomes boring, and they spawn frequently enough that these traps are effective. It is my hope to rectify this.
Phantom
Hostility: Passive
Physical characteristics (until I can make a 3D model): humanoid in basic shape, though it is missing the legs - instead, its as if it were wearing a tattered cloak, so it will appear to be hovering slightly above the ground. It has no face.
Actions: Will seek out the nearest torch/block of glowstone within a 20-block radius. Once it reaches a torch, it will proceed to snuff it out - not destroy it completely, but simply make the torch act as if the player struck it with their hand, so that the light goes out. Glowstone is unaffected by this, obviously.
While it appears to be almost invisible in the darkness, it will occasionally fade into solidness; at this point, it will emit a ghastly wail that can be heard from far away. Just as quickly, it will fade back into transparency.
Drops: At the moment, I can't think of any good drops for the phantom, except perhaps a new item: an invisibility cloak. The cloak will cause monsters not to see the player even if he/she is right next to them; however, monsters will be capable of spawning near the player, even in bright light - the cloak, when worn, acts as a kind of spawner almost. So while the cloak has its benefits, it can also be a danger to the player and his home.
Again, try to leave constructive criticism. That means don't just say "idea is stupid"; actually say why you don't like it.
Nice idea, it should be rare though. Could you supply a picture?
Yeah, the plan is for it to be really rare.
Um... I have absolutely no idea how to make 3D models or anything, and obviously I wouldn't want it to be the exact same shape as a human. I'm going to see if Firehazurd would be willing to divulge how he makes his models; until then, I can't really supply you with any real images.
I like the idea, but we should think of drops it would give, maybe ectoplasm which could be used as a sticky object that would have simillar properties to soulsand (only you sink in it if you create a block (4 ectoplasm = 1 ectoplasm block))?
I dislike the fact that it will remove torches, But my suggestion is that maybe it would be attracted to an already lit cave scource, where it will spawn. (It can spawn in light areas but only in cave systems), and it WILL be aggressive, so instead of not having to worry about having a creeper spawn in an already explored area of a cave, it can be a powerful mob that DOES spawn, unlike the rest, in a light area.
The reason I am hesitant to make it actually aggressive is because I feel that Minecraft needs variety in its mobs, and adding just another aggressive mob that spawns in light areas wouldn't really be helping that. Hence why I thought that it could be passive, but almost destructive in its own way.
As for ectoplasm, that actually isn't TOO bad of an idea... my only concern is that slimeballs would be better fitted to have that property. Ah, well. I came up with the idea for a kind of invisibility cloak in the OP; not sure whether its actually that good of an idea, though.
